W540 Ram upgrade

2014-01-07, 17:25 PM

What sort of RAM do I need to upgrade to 32GB?

Crucial shows a max of 16GB

It says right on the left: "Maximum Memory: 32GB"

You have to buy two of the 16GB kits and put in all 4 sticks.

Another Question: Can I install 24gb of memory too? Or just 16 or 32?

Yes, you can install 2x8GB + 2x4GB for 24GB total, I did this in my W520 for a little while. For best performance you have to put each in a particular spot so that the 8's are paired and the 4's are paired. The hardware maintenance manual should indicate where to put them.

So basically, you always have to use the 4 slots? None can be left empty?

No, you can have any number full/empty slots and any combination of RAM sticks but to take advantage of the (slightly increased speeds of) dual channel memory you need matched pairs.

Hi:

I am about to get a RAM upgrade for my W540 also --- from Crucial since that looks like faster RAM than you can find anywhere else (I am not en expert though).

I don't see the information about pairing in the manual. Do you have any other tips? I am willing to spend what looks like $150 to get 3 sticks to fill all the slots; but I want to be informed about the pairing and actually figure out what to get. (Plus they are out of stock on some options...)

I thought :[There is 1 8GB stick in there ...] but it might actually be 2 4GB sticks. I will have to look again.

Thanks for any pointers.

You must have a quad-core processor to use all 4 slots

Hi guys, I did a little hardware installation tutorial on the W540, with the SODIMM order here:

The Venerable ThinkPad W540 – A Journey in Multiple Parts

You can also see there what kind of RAM I'm using in mine, but I have 32GB installed and not

a single hiccup since I got it.

Cheers!
