Re: W550s vs. T550

Finally the mouse buttons are back so I'm now looking to replace my T61p with 1920x1200 screen. I'm a software developer that needs to work at customer's sites. I've been using ThinkPads since the butterfly, although my last several have been Txx models.

I want to upgrade to get the 16gb of memory, the higher resolution screen, better battery life, and faster processor. Roughly in that order. I can probably learn to live with the offset keyboard, but the lack of mouse buttons was a non-starter.

I've narrowed my choices down to the W550s or the T550. They seem to have about the same price and features.

What are the differences between these two models? Or are they similar enough that I should just flip a coin?

Re: W550s vs. T550

Hello.

The T-series and W-series are actually quite different. The T-series don't come with workstation graphic processors as the W-series do, and for the models you list, the T550 is more a basic ultrabook, albeit configurable to be quite powerful, only comes with the Intel HD GPU while the W550s comes with dual Optimus graphics, i.e. the Intel HD and NVIDIA Quadro K620M 2GB.

For what you have in mind I'd definitely go for the W550s.

Cheers!

ThinkPad W540 - i7-4800MQ/32GB // ThinkPad W520 - i7-2720QM/32GB

Re: W550s vs. T550

Thanks, I'd missed that substantial difference in the graphics hardware.

The T550 dimensions are listed as 11.02" x 9.92" x 0.88", while the W550s dimensions are listed as Non-Touch: 15" x 10.2" x 0.88". Is the T550 really narrower by 4 inches? Or is that an error in the specifications?

It does sound like the W550s is the one I want.

Re: W550s vs. T550

'evening.

Keep in mind that the W has a full numeric keypad-equipped keyboard, which would account for some additional width.

Regards.

Re: W550s vs. T550

Sounds like an error; 11" width doesn't make any sense.
