After BIOS update, got Bitlocker Recovery screen

2021-03-22, 23:00 PM

PLEASE HELP!

Yesterday I got Lenovo desktop M90N pop up message and asked me to run update, I run it and found it was BIOS update and Flash update. I left desktop for about 10 minutes. after return back, found the desktop was totally down, power light was off. I pushed the power button, I am now getting the Bitlocker Recovery screen and asked me to enter the Bitlocker key. I called Lenovo HelpDesk and it seems no one can help.

Please help for two questions:

1. Is this bitlocker screen was caused by BIOS and Flash updte?

2. How to fix the Bitlocker recovery error ?

Thank you.

Welcome to the Community

1. No idea. Some Windows Updates have been known to trigger Bitlocker

2. Find the Bitlocker key using one of these methods. If you can't find the key, you'll need to wipe the drive, reinstall the OS and recover from your most recent backup.

Re:After BIOS update, got Bitlocker Recovery screen

I did NOT run Windows update. I run the pop up window from Lenovo. The Lenovo said it is a BIOS/Flash update. The problem started immediately after Lenovo update. So Lenovo update caused this problem. I have many extremely important files on the desktop and there is no way I can recreate these files again. What can do to undo the Lenovo BIOS/Flash update ?

PLEASE HELP.

You may have had an update pending and didn't know it. No matter, Bitlocker won't activate if it doesn't have someplace to put the key. It'll be in one of the places I linked. There isn't a workaround. If you can't find the key, you'll need to wipe the drive and restore from your latest backup. If it's not in your Microsoft account, it may be in the Microsoft account of the person who first set the computer up.

I wish I had better news.

Re:After BIOS update, got Bitlocker Recovery screen

I login to Microsoft account system with Hotmail ID and PW, this Lenovo desktop is listed there, however, the Recovery Key for this Lenovo desktop is not listed there. Any fix for this?

I am the person setup this desktop but this desktop's system board was replaced a couple of months ago by a Lenovo technician since the system board was overheated and can not be turn on again. Will this Lenovo technician have the Recovery Key?

By the way, can this issue be fixed by replace the system board?

Re:After BIOS update, got Bitlocker Recovery screen

I found this statement from Dell website:

(When run the BIOS update ) If BitLocker is not suspended, the next time you reboot the system it will not recognize the BitLocker key.
You will then be prompted to enter the recovery key to progress and the system will ask for this on each reboot.

If the recovery key is unknown this can result in data loss or unnecessary operating system re-install.

However, Lenovo system never warned me to suspend or turn off the Bitlocker before run the BIOS update. So Lenovo BIOS update caused my desktop unusable. I am looking for a fix from Lenovo. I can not format the Hard drive since I have many extremely important files on the desktop and there is no way for me to recreate them.

PLEASE HELP!!!

Nope.  Once the data on the drive is encrypted, it's encrypted. The key is generated when Bitlocker is activated. Nobody else will have it.

A wise person once told me, "Any data that doesn't exist in at least three places, doesn't exist." Always be prepared for a computer to completely fail at any given moment.

If this computer were to short out right now, all I'd lose is this message.  Food for thought.

anyway, I found the Recovery key in a email. No further support is needed.

But Lenovo's BIOS update will cause many computers stop working. Lenovo's HelpDesk is useless!!!!

Yet ANOTHER huge problem in a long series of problems with Microsoft's update mechanism...  I hope Microsoft resolves that issue soon!
