On upgrading my ThinkPad Edge E545 to windows 10, I lost the ability to middle click. ....The new UltraNav had got rid of trackpoint options box that allowed me to select "neither" and only allowed me to change the senstivity of the scrolling.....Diabling trackpoint meant that I lost the ability to use the buttons at all!! Cray Cray!
I was losing it trying to fix it....reinstalling, rebooting, trying old drivers....nothing worked.....then finally I found this post about the same problem in windows 8...
Change "TrackPointMode" to dword:00002214 from the previous value of 00001214
Thank you jaymemaurice you da real MVP

duganmatt,
Thanks so much for taking the time to post about this!
Hopefully this will help others and they will add on comments here to confirm it worked for them too!
Best regards,
Mark

I already had this problem with my X60t under Windows 7. For me the other solution does not work under Windows 10 (clean install) . I do not have the Synaptics registry key, so presumably I have other drivers installed. However, I found a different solution.
In the old-style mouse options (via Control Panel or under Additional mouse options from the new-style mouse options), I have a tab "Track Point" with a section "Choose Scrolling or Magnifying Glass Function". The default setting here is "Scrolling". This isn't as harmless as it may appear. The solution to my middle button problem was to set it to "Neither" so the middle button is not abused to activate the scrolling functionality.

I've been trying to get this to work on my T420, but changing the value to 2214 seems to just completely disable the middle button, i.e. I can't scroll or middle-click. Are there any other registry values I should be trying?

I had the same problem and found the solution:
Like duganmatt said, you have to change (on my computer slightly different)
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-2158515036-987303324-3988316896-1001\SOFTWARE\Synaptics\SynTPEnh\UltraNavPS2
TrackPointMode from 1214 -> 2214
But I also had to change
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-2158515036-987303324-3988316896-1001\SOFTWARE\Synaptics\SynTP\StickSMBTM2182
MiddleButtonAction from 0 -> 4
I hope it helps you and others looking for solution.

Thanks! I had seen MiddleButtonAction and had tried changing it before, but I had absolutely no idea what to change it to.
In case anyone else comes through here, mine was under "stickPS2" instead of "StickSMBTM2182".

Thanks for the regedit tips! Just to add: these two registry edits also work on my W520 + windows10

Well...there are two families of mouse driver. Both can be persuaded to scroll by depressing the middle button and pulling the trackpoint up, down, left, or right.
The one from IBM/Lenovo/Synaptics has an icon when scrolling that looks like a domino--a rectangle divided into thirds with outward pointing arrowheads in the two end thirds.
The one from Microsoft has an icon when scrolling that looks like a circle with containing two outward-facing triangles. It also has a locking mode.
I prefer the one from Synaptics. I can't get it to scroll with the third button in Metro apps like the Edge browser. Some of the proposed solutions result in switching to the Microsoft driver.
Has anyone succeeded in getting the Synaptics driver to scroll in Metro Apps? How?
