Restart in WIN 10 leads to freeze on Lenovo Boot Screen: Software Update issue?

2017-12-11, 19:29 PM

I have recently purchased a T470s and an X1 Carbon 5th (both refurbished) from the Factory outlet. Both came with WIN 10 Pro installed. I ran System Updates for Windows and Lenovo Updates and I am under the assumption that a recently installed Driver that was updated by the Lenovo Companion may be the cause of the Boot process not working correctly all the time.

When working on the T470s, I noticed that during a restart that the Boot process would freeze on the Lenovo Boot Screen. With the words "To interupt normal startup, press Enter." The Problem is that it never fully loaded and pressing Enter did nothing.  At first I thought this was nothing and powered down the PC with Hard boot off and power back up. It then worked fine. But, then it froze on the Boot screen again, and then randomly it did it again.

Working with the X1, I had gotten all of my Windows Updates out of the way. A restart of the PC lead to no issue. I then was updating the Lenovo Updates. It appears the Critical and Recommended Updates* loaded fine with no issue, restarts were fine. When I ran the group of Optional Updates*, I was asked to restart, and we back to a frozen Boot Screen. What are the odds that 2 refurbished machines would have the same issue?  I tested restarting it 2 more times and it froze both times, but has now appeared to stop and boots normally.

The fact that issue happened immediately after loading Updated per Lenovo, makes me think this is a software issue. So does anyone else have this issue? Is it a known issue to be addressed in a new patch.

I am worried that this might a bigger issue than what I have found. Am I worrying too much? can anyone offer any insight?

Welcome to Lenovo Community.

I have not had that problem on my T470s, and I do not have an X1C. I updated everything on my T470s before installing Windows 10 Fall Update. That included the BIOS. I don't do Optionals unless I'm having a problem that one of them addresses. Have you checked manually for updates to see if you missed anything? Are you using Windows Defender or a third party anti-virus? Was that security running or disabled during those updates? I'm wondering if there may have been a conflict with any security that may be trying to load at boot. I'm not sure if this is a Windows 10 problem, but I'll leave this topic here for now. Perhaps any other members with the same issue will reply with suggestions.

Re: Restart in WIN 10 leads to freeze on Lenovo Boot Screen: Software Update issue?

Actually, I have similar issue.

I bought T470s in Thanks Giving, and received it on Dec 4. After update windows 10, when restart, it freeze at Lenovo logo page.  If I shut down, it can pass "lenovo log" stage, and enter windows. When "restart" in windows, it will freeze at Lenovo logo randomly, I contact several Technical support in Lenovo, nobody give good solution, and seems all of them just want a tckiet # from me.

Then I requested a replacement, and I got the 2nd one today, seems have same issue!!! Not sure if there is big issue, should I return it???

Thanks,

Hawk

And actually, this happens when I 1st setup T470s when I got it. When install update with guide at 1st time, it requires restart, then freeze there. I didn't do anything mannually yet...

I've actually had this happen now on 3 different machines, an T470s, a X1C 5th Gen after the Optional Updates rom Lenovo, and then a X1C 5th Gen (before the optional updates).

I want to isolate this issue, but Lenovos best effort have been to have me try to replace the HD on the T470s, which lead to a failed System Recovery. That machine got sent back to the Depot.

At this point, I see it as a mild annoyance until the issue becomes more critical. I would love for there to be a resolution, but I can't spend all of my time on this.

I've noticed that the stalled bootscreen occurs when running the critical update "Intel 8265 LAN Driver" version 20.30.0.7

I've powered it off and back on and it starts normally.  Haven't seen any other issues after that. I will install each lenovo update one at a time to see if this reoccurs.

Re: Restart in WIN 10 leads to freeze on Lenovo Boot Screen: Software Update issue?

Hi,

I have this on sevral machines right now.

Had it on 2 L570  (sent in to Lenovo) and now on 3 T470s on my bench (se picture).

It started with the L570 and Lenovo stated that it was problem with harddrives, they sent new ones that i changed.

Same problem after so they wanted the machines to be sent in.

Now a couple of days after a customer wanted a T470s and got the same error.

Got 2 other machines from our warehouse to see if i could reproduce when the problem started.

Its onsite repair boooked on one of the machine and technician was out yesterday. He installed a new BIOS that coincidental was released yesterday. Did not solve the problem.

I think the problem started after i installed Windows 10 Fall Creators update. Dont know how&why the Lenovo bios and windows 10 dont get it togheter. Read some older threads that it has been a problem before and they recommended to disable stuff in bios, fast boot and more but have not found anything to work for me.

Got a L570 back from lenovo support but i hung on first boot when i tried it.

I will post my findings.

/TR

Dear customers,

will the failure symptom change when you disable the Wireless LAN device at BIOS Setup -> Security -> I/O Port Access ?  I know there are a couple of reboot hang symptoms can be avoided by this method.

If the symptom gone with above BIOS Setup change, I'd like you to get the latest Bluetooth driver from the Lenovo download site and update it, then eneble the Wireless LAN again.

I hope this will solve your problem.

*Update*

Now its working on all machines.

Found that it helped to inactivate  "Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller -1.0" in device manager.

After that there were no boot-hangs.

Now 2weeks later its seems like it was solved by System Update.

Don't know exactly which driver it was thought.

I turned off WLAN in the BIOS via Security > I/O Access and then rebooted about 10 times and the issue did not return.  I then installed the latest Bluetooth driver, as you instructed, and turned WLAN back on.  Same issue on first boot....

Now what?
