Simple Question: Can I trust this Lenovo BIOS Update pop-up?

2021-07-12, 18:13 PM

Hi all.

Please see the picture:

Really simple question. Is this 100% legit?

I only ask because I may have had a bios virus at some stage that I believe Bitdefender destroyed. I just don't want to take any chances now.

What degree of confidence can you say it's a legit pop-up/update?

Welcome to the Community

Looks exactly like the ones I frequently get. Just ran one a couple weeks ago.  To be on the safe side, take an opportunity to run a virus scan and make a complete backup before running the update.

You can always dismiss that nudge if you're unsure and either use Vantage or download the update yourself from eSupport, linked in the top banner.

I second the suggestion to go to the model's eSupport page. Read the ReadMe file for the BIOS level to be installed. Unless there's some compelling reason to install it, I'd wait a month or so to ensure that there aren't any issues with the update. Then download/install it directly from Lenovo's site.

There are so many typos in the BIOS setup window that this has to be a virus, no?

Hello,

If you think the file is a virus because of typos in it, you can try uploading the file to a multi-engine scanning service such as Google's VirusTotal or OPSWAT's MetaDefender and have several dozen different antivirus/antimalware/internet security/endpoint protection engines scan it for malicious code.

Thanks to all who answered.

What typing errors can you see? I didn't notice any.

User MarlinWahine included a screen shot in their post, file Capture.PNG. That version of the message is full of grammar errors.

Ah, I see! I thought he was saying my bios update screenshot was full of errors.

I will definitely look out for suspicious things like that if I chose to update.

By the way, this BIOS update notification comes up quite infrequently. Is there away to initiate it again from within Windows? Or do I have to either wait for it to come up again or download and manually install?

Hello,

You should be able to download the BIOS update from Lenovo's support website and install it manually.
