USB Recovery Tool Fails

2018-01-15, 17:52 PM

Just received 2 X1C (20FB) laptops that are on Win 7. I am trying to get them to Win 10 using the Lenovo USB Recovery Creator Tool and I am able to get the download files. However, when I go to create the USB drive, the USB drive is validated, then fails with "failed to create partitions". I've tried this on a few different USB drives, same result. I've also used diskpart to clean the drive, etc. and the same result.

Any thoughts on getting this to work?

No sweat. I downloaded the USB tool to my Win 10 machine and it works fine there. So for anyone having this issue on Windows 7, just use the Windows 10 version on a different computer.

Thanks!

Someone had this problem before on Windows 7. Download Windows 10 ISO using Windows Media Creation Tool, then create bootable flash media using Rufus.

A small how-to, which I've created for other user some time ago:

Moreover, if your laptop came with Windows 7 Pro, then you might receive free recovery media from Lenovo. Go to website below and check, if laptop's Serial Number is eligible to get the media:

Thanks, Kacperas.

The laptops did come with the free upgrdade to W10 which is why I was using the Lenovo USB tool versus my own media. The problem is that the USB creator tool sucks and was hoping there was some workaround to making it work.

Ah, it slipped under my radar, that you tried to create Lenovo's recovery media. I never tried to create Lenovo's recovery media using Windows 7 - always on Windows 10.

However, you can do one thing. Use Windows Media Creation Tool to upgrade your Windows 7 to Windows 10. Make a backup of Lenovo's recovery first - upgrade usually go smooth, no data should be lost, but... things happends. Then try to create recovery media using just upgraded laptop.

Do you use any antivirus or antimalvare software? It seems, that something is modifying USB flash disk during creation process. As the result, verification process fails.

If you use Windows 10 media creation tool, you can just download an ISO file and then use Rufus to create bootable media.

After trying the Windows 10 creation tool for days and it failing. I was able to download the creation tool on my device for Windows 7 and then select the media order for my device. I could NOT be happier, I now have the recovery and my device is like new although I was going to send my device in for repair. I purchased my device back in July of this year! I have an Ideapad 3.
