Windows 10 Update - Black Screen With Cursor X201 (after account login)

Hi All,

As the title states - New Windows 10 Update is not letting me access my desktop after I login to my account. I am just staring at a black screen with my cursor on it.

I have tried to open up task manager, but nothing happens.

Any suggestions?

Help would be greatly appreciated!

Mike

Re: Windows 10 Update - Black Screen With Cursor X201 (after account login)

Hmmm... maybe you can try to use System Restore to get the PC back to the last created restore point; your files/documents will not get touch, just the programs you had installed, including the Windows Update, since the date the restore created. Restore points are created automatically so the last one should not be from long ago.
Maybe you can access system restore by starting Windows into safe-mode or, if you have a system-repair disc, you can get into System Restore from it.

I literally cannot access anything unfortunately.

Just a black screen with my mouse moving around.

Re: Windows 10 Update - Black Screen With Cursor X201 (after account login)

I found some info, I am not totally sure if it will work on your PC but at least try it out.
At the moment when the computer is booting up you need to press (or keep pressed) certain combination of keys, generally simple F8, Fn + F8, or Shift + F8, which sometimes will give you access to the new "advance repair options". Then you can go to Troubleshoot > Advance Options and it will give you several options including 'System Restore', 'Automatic Repair', and start Windows into Safe-Mode.

Thank you for this. I managed to figure out how to start the laptop into safemode...but when I login...same situation. Black screen with a cursor.

Maybe it is graphics related?
