Re: Windows 10 gestures with Synaptics touchpad

2015-09-01, 15:23 PM

look in the registry hklm local machine under app profiles for sunaptics. all the app profiles are set to change the defaults to windows 8.1 touchpad gestures. if your running adobe, firefox etc....they will change the values apon first open. to fix rename that program folder or the entire app profiles folder, just add -save to the end and reboot.

i only run google chrome from the apps listed there, which is why it worked for me. i just changed it to google chrome - save and all gestures work. been running this for a week now. synaptics either forgot to update those apps or remove the folder completely. there are a ton listed there.

Re: Windows 10 gestures with Synaptics touchpad

Maybe a bit more input on the AppProfiles is needed.

From what I have seen there are three different posiitions for AppProfiles in the registry:

1) HKLM\Software\SynTPEnh\OSD\Touchpad\AppProfiles\<profile name>

This includes information for Synaptics driver how to recognize the different apps in order to apply the correct AppProfile setting.

E.g. AppProfile for Google Chrome has entry AppExe = chrome.exe

The other registry key "AppFriendlyName" could be name of the AppProfile to apply.

2) HKLM\Synaptics\SynTP\Defaults\AppProfiles

This includes the configuration of the AppProfile itself.

For Google Chrome you find a few entries for 3FingerGestures and Custom Zones.

All entries in 3FingerEntries for ActionIDs 1, 3, 5, 7 (Up, Right , Down, Left) are set to value 28. The meaning of value 28 is "Keyboard Macro"

3) HKLM\Synaptics\SynTPEnh\PlugInConfig\TouchPad\AppProfiles

This is the macro configuration. The syntax of the Macros is difficult (if not impossible) to read and understand. However, in the SynPD.inf file of the driver installer you can find comments as explanation like:

;---------------------  Mozilla Firefox  ---------------------
[...]

HKR,SOFTWARE\Synaptics\SynTP\Defaults\AppProfiles\Mozilla Firefox\2FingerGestures,ActionID7,0x00010001,28

HKR,SOFTWARE\Synaptics\SynTPEnh\PlugInConfig\TouchPad\AppProfiles\Mozilla Firefox\2FingerGestures,ConfigID7KeyMacroV001,0x00000000,"ConfigID7KeyMacroBin"
[...]

;Left -> Alt + Left
HKR,SOFTWARE\Synaptics\SynTPEnh\PlugInConfig\TouchPad\AppProfiles\Mozilla Firefox\2FingerGestures,ConfigID7KeyMacroBin,0x00000001,\
  01,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,\

[...]

4) HKLM\\Synaptics\SynTPPlugIns\SynTP

Here you can find some of the action value IDs explained. Entry for "28" says ShortName = "Keyboard Macro".

I would not reommend to delete /rename all AppProfiles because they also control the other FingerGestures like two-finger-rotation in Picture editors to rotate picture clock- or counterclockwise. Maybe they also control the zoom gestures (two-finger pinch).

Maybe it is better to just delete all 3FingerGestures configuration in HKLM\Synaptics\SynTP\Defaults\AppProfiles and

HKLM\Synaptics\SynTPEnh\PlugInConfig\TouchPad\AppProfiles.

For me working on the AppProfiles is too much work. My workaround with modifying access rights in HKCU Synaptics registry entries and a taskkill of SynTPEnh after resume from standby works stable too and I haven't touched a single AppProfile :)

Re: Windows 10 gestures with Synaptics touchpad

I have been running with the google-save trick for a week now and haven't had any adverse issues and the windows three finger swipes. They have been consistently working through many sleep/restore cycles. Obviously this is a bug in the synaptics driver and it may or may never get fixed, hard to tell. So this work around at least works for me.

bog2nator - Thanks for clarifying that. I was a bit confused on that registry "app profiles" workaround. I just did it, and hopefully I can come back and report no issues. Really grateful for forums like these

On a similar note, my 1st replacement for my Yoga 3, it came with the Enan touchpad which after a whole day of using, it did not lose the 3 finger gesture functionality. Even better, it allowed you to change the three finger tapping and four finger tapping to function as web browser "back" or "forth" gestures. Pretty nice!

Unfortunately, I had to return that model becaus it had a noticeable piece of dust in between the glass screen and the display : (

Now my 2nd replacement has the Synaptics touchpad again, with same issues (hopefully fixed), and no option to change 3 or 4 finger tapping to something else.

Meh - This laptop is half the cost of what a MBP Retina (my 2nd choice) is.

np gja, i also did the same to powerpoint and word, it was causing the gestures to go back to windows 8.1 defaults.

i know what you mean about elan touchpads, my wifes lenovo u530 touch has an elan. 0 issues, and seems way more responsive. however since putting -save to the reg entries that are causing issues all my windows 10 gestures have been working perfect. reboot, sleeps doesnt matter it all works.

anyone running firefox is going to have the same issue. IE or edge wont bc syaptics doesnt have a app profile for it.

Re: Windows 10 gestures with Synaptics touchpad

I have a U430p with the Synaptics touch pad and have been experiencing the same issues as reported in this forum. I have been uninstalling-reinstalling the synpatics drivers to no end.

I am hoping someone can post (simple) directions for the bug work-around? I was having a hard time tracking all of the different proposed fixes.

And what the HELL Lenovo? FIX THIS!

Re: Windows 10 gestures with Synaptics touchpad

this is not actually a lenovo issue, synaptics didnt update any of the app profiles to account for the new windows 10 gestures. the fix it actually pretty simple but requires going into the registry.

open registry and go to HKLM/software/synaptics. located the app profiles folder and add -save to any app profile that you have on your computer and is causing issues. reboot. issue fixed.

the problem is when opening chrome for instance it would change the default registry values to the values of windows 8.1. so making the app profile to google chrome -save would make windows not see and load the old registry values and keep the default the windows 10 entries in tact.

Thanks bog3nator, I know this is probably really simple, but just a few follow up questions on how to:

In registry editor-

I exported the Google Chrome, added "-save" at the end of the selected branch "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Synaptics\SynTP\Defaults\AppProfiles\Google Chrome"

But I am not sure how to resave it. It keeps giving me an error saying that the selected branch does not exist.

I know I am missing something int he step.

Run-->regedit-->navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Synaptics\SynTP\Defaults\AppProfiles\Google Chrome-->export-->????

Exporting registry entries does not make sense here unless you want to have a backup before making the desired changes. You can do the modification directly in the registry. Just go to the entry, select F2 (activates rename mode) and add "save" to the name.

Be aware that you may need to modify a lot of AppProfiles.. I described an alternative way in an earlier posting. This works pretty well for me since I've done it.
