Windows 11 compatibility test failed on ThinkPad T470s

I have the same issue with Lenovo Thinkpad T470s.

Hardware wise, I have TPM 2.0 enabled, Secure Boot Enabled. CPU is i7 7500U with 24GB RAM and 1TB HDD. At present it is running Windows 10 Pro (the latest update).

Still when I run the compatibility check for windows 11. I get a message that this computer cannot install windows 11.

Someone please give me an answer.

What is the rationale behind Microsoft saying that consumer should at least have 8th Gen CPU

You'll have to ask Microsoft ;)

MS is touting that there isn't much changed between Windows 10 and Windows 11 except for more reliance on TPM 2.0 or above and a couple of polished GUI and few upgrades.

So why the concern about whether your system will run Win11 or not? This is a serious question. I don't see anything in Win11 that's compelling. Meanwhile Win10 will be supported to at least 2025. I see no urgent reason to upgrade to Win11.

MS needs to address this issue pretty soon as in the present state of affairs, consumers do not have funds to go for a newer machine just to run the latest iteration of windows.

Again, this is an issue that consumers need to take up with Microsoft.

Keep in mind that other devices, most notably smartphones, are generally supported only for about three years. That's a lot shorter period than Microsoft provides for Windows.

BTW, I do agree that it seems odd that Microsoft drew the CPU line between 7th and 8th gen Intel. If they don't revisit that I wouldn't be surprised if some third party came up with a hack to override that check in the official Win11 installer. But that's pure speculation on my part. [OTOH perhaps there's some new hardware feature on 8th gen and newer CPUs that Win11 depends on.]

They updated the Device Health Check App, try again. Another reason could be is because you're using a 7th gen processor and the new compatibility list mentions >8th Gen. Anyhow, check the new Device Health Check App, it will tell you the exact reason now.

Re:Windows 11 compatibility test failed on ThinkPad T470s

Thank you very much.

I did download the newer version which available in the MS website and ran the compatibility test.

I still get the same answer (will not be able to run Windows 11).

Looking at the reason, the PC meets all the Hardware requirement including the CPU as the at no place it has been mentioned that the PC requires to have >8 generation CPU.

Processor:

1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster with 2 or more cores on a compatible 64-bit processor or System on a Chip (SoC) - i7 7500U 2.7GHz

RAM:

4 gigabyte (GB) - 24GB

Storage:

64 GB or larger storage device - 1 TB

Note: See below under “More information on storage space to keep Windows 11 up-to-date” for more details.

System firmware:

UEFI, Secure Boot capable - UEFI , Secure Boot enabled

TPM:

Trusted Platform Module (TPM) version 2.0 - TPM 2.0

Graphics card:

Compatible with DirectX 12 or later with WDDM 2.0 driver

the above is what I have and don't understand why I need to buy a new computer with a newer processor? This is ridiculous.

Re:Windows 11 compatibility test failed on ThinkPad T470s

Thank you very much.

Yes. I did take a look at it before too. What is the rationale behind Microsoft saying that consumer should at least have 8th Gen CPU. as per the specs of 7th Gen and 8th Gen or above CPU there isn't much difference which MS can take advantage of in order to make Windows 11 work.

Further, MS is touting that there isn't much changed between Windows 10 and Windows 11 except for more reliance on TPM 2.0 or above and a couple of polished GUI and few upgrades. If one can run windows 10 (latest build - 21H1), without any issues whatso ever, how does MS expect consumers to go and change PCs as and when they release a newer version.

No wonder, why I am seeing a lot of consumers changing their desktop operating system to linux based distros. I am also running Linux on the same machine on a dual boot scenario and I find Linux distro working much faster and without any BSD.

MS needs to address this issue pretty soon as in the present state of affairs, consumers do not have funds to go for a newer machine just to run the latest iteration of windows.

Re:Windows 11 compatibility test failed on ThinkPad T470s

I fully agree with you on all counts.

The other way is to have Lenovo tweak their hardware by way of driver updates (BIOS etc.) in order to circumvent this issue.

I have already seen people circumventing the hardware requirement and installing the leaked version of Windows 11.

Lets see what MS has to say about it as I have dropped a note to MS support.

Hi I installed it last night on my T470s (8gb) despite failing the compatability test, seems a little slow but otherwise working OK so far.

Re:Windows 11 compatibility test failed on ThinkPad T470s

Hello,

Windows 11 is still under active development by Microsoft.  There is a system requirements page, and it is could change any time right up until the operating system's release.

Until Microsoft has released the operating system to manufacturers and it is available on store shelves, so that people can begin verifying compatibility we will not know for certain what processors are and are not supported.
