2021-07-05, 1:06 AM

given that windows 11 wants TPM 2.0 not much I can do with my dinosaurs outside Linux as windows 10 expires in 2025

I own: T400 T500 X220 running Windows 10 x64 & My X230 runs Linux for my webserver. I also own an Apple MacBook along with an iPad Pro 12.9", both with 256GB SSD

Considering that the T400 and T500 are now about a dozen years old and the X220 is a decade old, it's not surprising that they won't run Win11, TPM or not.

Moreover it won't be just because they lack TPM 2.0. They also lack powerful enough CPUs, among other things. You'd need a T480 or newer to pass that hurdle. If you feel bad about the T400 not making the cut, how do you think owners of T470 must feel?

If your T400/T500 are still running in 2025 these systems will have earned a well-deserved retirement.

as long as it powers up it still has some value as the power consumption is reasonable

It is probably best to see how Win11 minimum requirements, as defined by Microsoft, play out.

worse comes to worse I guess i can solder on a new tpm chip to the logic boards

new laptops still lack tpm 2.0 for several affordable models

Hello,

TPM 1.x and TPM 2.0 chips are not compatible.  They may be physically different, or in the case of some TPM 2.0 designs, be integrated into other components such as the chipset.

My AM4 systems have integrated TPM 2.0 in the CPU itself
