Thinkpad P70 not supported for Windows 11

2021-10-15, 10:04 AM

Thinkpad P70 is not on Lenovo's list of supported PCs for Windows 11.

My first question is why - it  is only 4 years old - it has UEFI , secure boot, TPM 2.0 - so what is missing?

Second, has anyone successfully installed it on their P70?

Welcome to the Community

The P70 shipped with 6th-generation Intel CPUs. Microsoft currently has the line drawn at 8th generation. That could change, but for now that's the reason the P70 won't update. Fortunately, Windows 10 will be supported until at least 2024 and will likely still work long afterwards. I still have a couple machines running Windows 7 and they work just fine.  Unless you have some overwhelming need to move to Win 11, I'd just sit back and wait, if I were you.

IndiaTango, it may be because of the 4-year-old processor.  If that is the case it would be better to continue with Windows 10 until 2025 rather than to slow down your computer with Windows 11. Have you run the PCHealthCheck? You will find it at the bottom of this page: Upgrade to the New Windows 11 OS | Microsoft

Thanks for your replies.

My machine is actually a P71 with an Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E3-1535M v6 @ 3.10GH, so as you say it is a gen 6. The only reason it is not supported is that M$ has not validated it - all other harware reuirements are met, according to the PC Health Checker.

As a lifelong developer, and 33 years of Windows development experience I like to be up-to-date on the OS front, but this time I am I will refuse as it will cost me 10k USD to replace my machine - after only 4 years. I am gutted.
