Thinkpad i7-7820HQ not supported for Win 11

2021-10-05, 20:34 PM

Microsoft says this processor is not supported on Lenovo products because of non-"modern" drivers. Does Lenovo plan on fixing this? Looks like Dell and Microsoft devices with this processor pass the test. Lenovo has defective drivers??

"Only select devices that shipped with modern drivers based on Declarative, Componentized, Hardware Support Apps (DCH) design principles."

And here is what it says on the "select devices" page:

Windows 11 Intel® Core™ i7-7820HQ Supported Systems

Dell Precision 5520
Surface Studio 2

10/4/2021: Page updated to remove Lenovo device from list

Re:Thinkpad i7-7820HQ not supported for Win 11

Hello,

The Business Unit has informed me that the ThinkPad P71 & P51 were not included on Lenovo's list of supported devices because they do not meet the requirements set by Microsoft and are considered as end of development life by Lenovo. I will personally add that I would expect normal driver support to be provided into 2023 as will security patch updates if required, according to the PSREF for the P71 system it will become end of support in 2023, Microsoft has also stated that they will continue providing twice yearly updates for Windows 10 into 2025.

Systems with the i7-7820HQ were built on a legacy (NON DHC) platform used throughout all the P51 & P71 system types which did not include Modern (DHC), this was done to avoid mixing hardware in the market place, they will remain with the legacy drivers.

For those wishing to upgrade to Windows 11 Microsoft published the below information in regard to installing Windows 11 on devices which do not meet the minimum requirements.

I have a Lenovo P71 with the same processor and I am getting the same issue trying to install Windows 11. If you look at the accepted devices only the Dell Inspiron is on the list, but it also says that the list was updated on 10/4/2021 to remove Lenovo devices. This is weak as puppy piss. If Lenovo can't get it together quick then the next laptop I but will not be a Lenovo.

I have Lenovo T470p which was supported in the device list until Oct 4th, 2021. This is frustrating and I think I will not buy Lenovo next time.

Hello @tescher

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I've passed your comments on to the business unit for them to review and investigate the information provided and, of course, let us know the outcome. This will likely take a few days but I will pass on any updates I receive.

No action will be taken by Lenovo to upgrade to the new Windows for this processor.

Hello,

I'm happy to answer that, no they do not. Also, FYI, Lenovo does not have any official presence in Iran, this issue is being looked into by Lenovo teams based in the USA and China.
