Windows Update Fails After Installing New Hard Drive

After migrating a system to a new hard drive, Windows Update fails with message "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running."

The industry is moving to higher capacity higher density hard drives that use Advanced Format technology.  These drives use 4k-byte sectors.  Windows 7 requires an updated AHCI driver to correctly identify and manage these drives.

Per this Microsoft article - An update that improves the compatibility of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 with Advanced Form... - installing Service Pack 1 and/or the described hotfix should correct this problem. If those fixes aren't sufficient, install the Intel Rapid Storage Technology software.  Note: if the link is stale, search for "Intel Rapid Storage Technology".

Note: advanced users may choose to install only the Intel driver, not the entire Intel package.  See the Intel readme for details.
