3GB Memory Limit and 64 Bit Operating Systems

2008-02-21, 5:02 AM
Let me start by saying I love my new Ideapad.  But I have one problem

Lenovo claims the system is upgradable to 4GB of memory so I bought 2 2GB sticks.  I quickly learned that Vista 32 has a limit of only 3GB.  There is a fix in most system bios that allow you to remap the memory and let it become usable by a 32 bit operating system.  That setting is non-existant on the IdeaPad system bios which means if you want to upgrade to the promised 4GB of memory you will need to upgrade to the 64 bit version of Vista.  Does anyone know if a system bios update is available or when I can expect an update?

My company has a liscense to test all Microsoft products so I went ahead and installed the 64 bit version of Vista.  I had trouble installing some of the drivers.  I downloaded the drivers from the lenovo website but when I tried to install them I recieved errors stating that the software I was trying to install was only valid on Lenovo Laptops.  So it appears that if you are not using the Lenovo OEM version of Vista then you are not able to install about 50 percent of the drivers.  Has anyone else had trouble with the drivers on Vista 64.

There is no "fix" to the memory access limitations in Microsoft's 32 bit OSs.  There are some reaonably unsatisfactory workarounds, that are mostly more trouble than they are worth.  See http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=49703

I have retail Microsoft Vista Ultimate x64 running fine on a T61 using the Lenovo supplied drivers, which all installed without any problems.

Cheers,

Bill

It's called memory remapping and is reference in this Microsoft KB929605 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929605.  This will allow the most of the 4GB to be usable by a 32 bit OS.

I don't know why my post was moved.  My post directly asks about a bios update to the ideapad y510 and for 64bit driver support on the ideapad y510.  I doubt I will get the responses I require in the windows forum.

Well, the keyword here is Physical Address Extension (PAE) for 32-Bit systems, which is called on Windows Address Windowing Extensions (AWE). And there can be found a bunch of information, MS knowledge base articles, white papers etc. on the net related to this theme, when performing a Google search. (For example here).

However, as correctly stated above from a poster, using PAE/AWE is not without issues on a 32-Bit Windows system and thus you often get more trouble with drivers and the like than a stable running system at all. - So it's better and safer to use directly a 64-Bit Windows system instead of trying to enhance the address space of a 32-Bit windows system via PAE/AWE mechanisms.

From what I could find PAE only effects memory greater the 4GB.  I am looking to use the memory between 3Gb and 4GB.  I did try using PAE switches but it had no effect.  My Vista 32 only recognizes 3GB of RAM.

As I said before Memroy Remapping on the bios level has worked for others.  I have seen it first hand.  Unfotunatly the system bios that came with my Y510 does not have that option or many options for that matter.  I just want to know if there is an alternat Bios or a Bios upgrade for the Y510.  I am hopeful that Memory Remapping will be an option in a future version.

Your above referenced MS knowledge base text says, clearly under the workaround section among the requirements to meet ...  "an x64 (64-bit) version of Windows Vista must be used", and that's basically what we already told you.

For a 32-Bit Windows always the following applies, see those HP white paper explanations ...

http://h20331.www2.hp.com/Hpsub/down...HP_MWP_x64.pdf

http://h20331.www2.hp.com/Hpsub/down...ows_08Ap07.pdf

... and thus you will never see the full 4 GB under a 32-Bit Windows OS.

not even the T61p with 4GB and 32-bit windows can see more than 3GB.   i wrote a lengthy article about it over on forum.thinkpads.com.

your only option to use all 4GB is to install a 36- or 64-bit-capable OS like server 2003, XP x64, vista x64, or various flavors of linux.

Hello,

Have you tried installing the 64-bit version of Microsoft Windows Vista and used the device drivers from the various chip/component manufacturers for Vista x64?  If so, did that work for you?

I did and I was able to get most of the drivers installed.  The big exception was the driver for the LAN card.  I was unable to find a driver for that.  I also was unable to install the energy cut software or the webcam software.  There was also one unkown device listed in the device manager which I could not figure out.

I gave up in frustration and went back to the 32bit vista.  I guess I will just have to live with this.  I just feel ripped off because I sent my money on 4gb's of RAM and only get 3gb's.  If Lenovo just had better support fo rhte 64bit Vista then this would not be a problem.

Hello,

Did you check to see what network interface card shows up in your IdeaPad when running the 32-bit version of Microsoft Windows Vista?  If so, you could then try visiting the network chipset manufacturer's web site and downloading their 64-bit drivers.
