Do I Need To Install Lenovo Drivers After A Fresh Install Of Windows 7 Pro

2011-07-27, 16:30 PM

I've just installed Windows 7 Pro (with SP1) on a Lenovo ThinkPad Edge and after running the Lenovo System Update utiltiy it doesn't list any drivers that need installing.

When I had a look at the Drivers & Downloads section of this website it lists lots of Windows 7 drivers available for the laptop.

I've looked in Device Manager and there are no issues reported so do I leave it as is or do I download all the drivers and install them?

Great question!

I personally would just wait and see that everything
works properly over time.
If there is any added funtionality that a Lenovo driver
adds, maybe install it.
But it is nice to have a system with no added drivers
or "extras". Truly Clean!

I'd have Power Manager installed to manage battery thresholds. The Power Management driver would also be nice. Other than that you shouldn't really need much.

The UltraNav driver might also be useful for maximum configurability of the TrackPoint and touchpad.

There are certain drivers that I will have to install such as the ThinkVantage Active Protection System which is one of the great things about Lenovo laptops.

I'm just surprised that after running the the ThinkVantage System Update it said there were no driver updates available for my system.

The System Update is a fantastic idea, in my experience of using it on over 120 laptops, it's only around 70% usefull and a lot of manual driver downloading is still needed.

There's still a few kinks to work out as they update the site and System Update's internals, so it might not be working as expected right now.
