Error 1722. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package.....

2008-05-09, 18:01 PM
I'm trying to run a simple.msi file, that I've run several times on many other T60p's just like this one.  Only, on this machine, I get this message:

Error 1722.  There is a problem with this Windows Installer package.  A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected.  Contact your support personnel or package vendor.

I've already contacted the vendor that wrote the .msi file.  No help there.  They suggested that the windows installer is corrupt and that I need to do a Windows XP repair.  Ok, so I figured I give it try.  Now, if I put the Windows CD in and reboot, I get the Windows Setup screen as expected.  When I press enter to continue to the screen that should allow me to select "R" to do a repair, it tells me that it cannot find a hard drive on my system and to press F3 to quit.  That's it...no other option.  So, I can't even do a Windows repair.  Now what do I do?  I've been screwing around with this thing for a week now and have gotten nowhere.  Can anybody help me?  Please!!!

EScales, welcome to the forum,

your Windows XP cd doesn't have the S-ATA drivers. Go into BIOS and set S-ATA to Compatability Mode. Then run your repair.

I did what you suggested, and tried to boot from a Windows XP cd.  I can get to the portion that shows the partitions, but there still is no choice to do a repair.  So, after lots of reboots and screwing around, I can't get it to boot up at all.  I get the ThinkVantage screen and press the blue button to access the Rescue and Recovery, but I only get a startup interrupt screen with choices to go into the BIOS, boot from another drive or continue with the normal boot.  But, the normal boot takes me to a blank screen with a blinking cursor in the upper left corner.  I cannot type anything.  All I can do is power down.  I was hoping to get in to the Rescue and Recovery screen and restore my system to the factory defaults.  I'd be happy with that at this point, but I can't even get that.  I have several system that are identical to this one.  Is there a way that I can create a Rescue and Recovery cd from another system and then boot from it on this system?  I could always wipe the hard drive clean and start with a new installation of Windows, but I wanted to preserve the partition with the ThinkVantage information on it.  Any suggestions as to what to try next?

Run the installer and log what is really going on.  I.e. from a CMD prompt, try running the MSI using:

msiexec /lx <mylogfileanddir> /i <filename.msi>

e.g.

msiexec /lx c:\log.txt /i setup.msi

Then have a looksee in the log to see what is going on...

Hello,

A few things to check, in no particular order:
  1. Have you tried copying over the .MSI package again from a different source?  Perhaps the file you copied over somehow became corrupt, or did not copy successfully to the ThinkPad T60p.
  2. Tried reinstalling the Windows Installer redistributable on the computer.
  3. Verify you have administrative rights on the computer.
  4. Verified the permissions on the currently-logged in user profile.
  5. If the package installs components such as updated Microsoft Visual C++ runtime libraries, verified it has permissions to replace them.
  6. If the package requires a specific version of the .NET Framework, verify it is installed.
  7. Deleted the contents of the temporary file directory (pointed to by the %TEMP% variable), rebooted and tried installing the package again.
  8. Tried performing a manual uninstallation (remove directories, files, registry entries and so forth) associated with the package per the author's instructions, just in case it partially installed before failing, and then tried installing it again?

Perhaps one of these will allow you to install the MSI package in question.

Regards,
