Finding W7 video drivers and replacing the default Standard VGA Graphics adapter

2009-10-25, 15:50 PM

Hi all,

I have a specific question after upgrading my T61p to Windows 7, but I suspect this may be of interest to others as well.

After upgrading my T61p (6460-6XG) from Vista to Windows 7 I ended up application reporting issues with my graphics card. When I checked my Device Manager I noticed that instead of my 256MB nVIDIA Quadro FX 570M I had listed a Standard VGA Graphics adapter.

I found Windows 7 drivers for a 256MB nVIDIA Quadro FX 570 (without the M) on te NVIDIA website (Quadro Driver Release 191), but when I run the EXE I got an error: The NVIDIA Setup Program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware. Setup will now exit". I also found a drivers on catalog.update.microsoft.com, but it is not clear which one I should download or how to test the driver I downloaded.

My question is: how can I find video driver and replace the default Standard VGA Graphics adapter?

Kind regards

Anton

Try this -

1) Go to device manager and expand "Display adaptors".

2) Right click your video card and select "Uninstall"

3) In the box that pops up check "Delect the driver software for this device"

If you were already at the standard VGA drivers this "delete" option may not appear. At any rate this will take you back to a generic set of VGA drivers.

Now reboot with an automatic connection to the internet. Win 7 should find a very good set of drivers for you automatically. If nothing happens, go to Windows update.
