Free Upgrade to Windows 7

2009-06-04, 23:46 PM

I've heard rumors that OEM are going to be able to offer free upgrades to windows 7, for people who buy computers with vista after a certain date.  Does anyone know about this, and if Lenovo is going to participate? If they do participate does any one know what the requirements will be?

I ask because I'm probably going to be purchasing a D20 tomorrow and I want to find out whether or not that is a good idea at this time, or should I wait.  I really don't want to wait as I can't get any work done without a new computer, but on the other had It might be worth waiting if it will save me the additional $500.00 or what ever it will cost for the upgrade.

Hopefully someone, better yet someone from lenovo who know the real lowdown, can sneer my question tonight.

Kind Regards,

Aniket

welcome to the forum!

according to techarp here, microsoft says that any system purchased with vista on or after june 26th, 2009 will be elegible for an upgrade to windows 7.   whether this upgrade will be done through lenovo or directly through microsoft, i don't know.   whether lenovo will participate or not, i don't know, but i'd personally be surprised if they didn't.   lenovo's policy doesn't allow the discussion of unannounced products or services and since nothing has been officially announced, there's no official word on this program.

personally, i'd buy a D20 now and worry about windows 7 later.   while 7 is rumored to be released before the end of the year, anything could happen between now and then.   in the meantime you could be using and enjoying your new thinkstation. ;)

(edit: corrected date)

Actually Erik, that website says June 26, 2009 and not June 1st. Originally the date of the free upgrade programs was to be July 1st, but it says that OEM pressure has resulted in a changed date.

Aniket, we still need to wait on what Lenovo announces on June 26 (if they do). However, I just bought my T500 at a great price that I'm not sure I would get after Windows 7 is released. If the price is good - don't wait. You'll always be able to get a discounted Windows 7 upgrade (at most $200?).In the mean time you could just use the Windows 7 RC....

Thanks for the welcome guys.  You both make sense, and I'm sure it will be a while before companies stop making versions of their products with XP anyway.  But free is free, and I would rather have the option than not have the option, though I'm not going to install windows 7 till sp1 or sp2 come out; I've never been a first adopter or products, especially Microsoft products, I just don't need all the headaches.

Hey one more thing guys, I just noticed that  the spell checker that is available on the group does not recognize Lenovo as a correct spelling by default.  Thats kind of lame and I was wonder if either of you know whom I should send a message to to get that fixed.

Kind Regards,

Aniket
