Lenovo shipped 32bit disc for 64 bit system?

2010-01-09, 21:03 PM

I am doing the upgrade for a customer, but it halts saying that the disc is 32 bit version, so I pulled it and indeed it is. Is this a mistake by lenovo or am I supposed to try and force this as a fresh install?

Recieved 2 discs, the 32 bit win7 and lenovo drivers for win7.

Customers computer is the g550/2958 with vista home premium.

Hi JLM, and welcome to the Lenovo User Community!

What are the three characters after 2958?

If it is a model configured with 32-bit Windows, Lenovo will provide 32-bit discs.

USB-C: Just cos it fits don't mean it works.
I don't work for Lenovo. I'm a crazy volunteer!

Hello JLM

I also received the incorrect media and believe it was a packaging error.  The Order Confirmation email, Packing Slip and part number on the media jacket all stated 64 bit, however the enclosed Win 7 disk was 32 bit.

So far I have been completely unsuccessful getting anyone to respond about how I can have the media replaced with the correct disk but am still trying.

I was told the COA works for either version so if you have access to 64bit download of the version you want to install,

you can use this for a temporary fix.

Hope this helps. For a permanent fix try contacting Mentor Media and Lenovo to see if you can get the problem fixed.

I have question about Windows licenses.

If computer is ordered with 32bit is does that same license work if i install 64bit version later?

I have a similar, yet slightly different question:

I bought a new T400s which came with Vista Business 32 bit pre-installed and ordered Windows 7 Ultimate at the same time. What I got was a OEM System Builder Windows 7 Ultimate package with 32 bit media only. This seems to be a "full" license, not an upgrade license.

Can the key I got also be used to activate a 64 bit installation (supposing I got hold of 64 bit media somehow)?

I think (correct me if I'm wrong) Retail Windows 7 Ultimate has both 32 bit and 64 bit media, but a single key that works with both (but you can install either, not both).

However, the free upgrade DVD from Lenovo (OEM) is either 32 bit or 64 bit, depending on whether you are upgrading from 32 or 64 bit Vista (which makes sense).

Does anyone know?

To answer my own question: Yes, it works.
