Programming on Twist w Win8 Pro?

2012-12-20, 16:45 PM

These questions concern potentially doing development work (.Net,Sql) on a Lenovo laptop (to be purchased).

1. How feasible is it to do Windows development on (a) a Twist w/ Win8Pro (b) T430 (c) W530? (Thus far a SL410 Win7-64 has done me fine but HDD is failing.)

2. Will Lenovo or even Ms restore the old Start and/or Windows Explorer etc to Win8Pro?

3. For the purpose (dev work at home), do you strongly recommend any other specific Lenovo laptops?

4. Do you know of any Lenovo laptops which one coud purchase w Win7Pro right now with included upgrade to Win8Pro once Win8 stabilizes?

Any information would be appreciated!

1. I'm asuming T430u. That being said, I'm developing in VS2012, SQL2012, Oracle and several other things in my S430. I'd say both the Twist and the T430u would perform at least as well; I really don't know the W530, maybe someone does. Seems a pretty solid machine and it does have the benefit of bigger screen resolution (very important).
2. M$ won't restore nothing. You can read plenty over the web. But there are several tools lying around to do so.
3. T430 sounds great, and S430 is not available in USA.
4. I find W8 *very* stable. As a matter in fact, I find it much more stable and fast than W7. And I can say that I do use it quite a lot and in a intensive way. I couldn't think of a reason to buy a system with W7 today.

I haven't used the twist or T430, so I wouldn't know those machines, but I have a W530, running windows 8 Pro. I run VS2012, and leave my old desktop to handle SQL Server and Team Foundation. It is great for development if price is not an issue.
