Only if your system originally came with Windows 8 and has the Windows 8 OEM license (OA3).  If you upgrade your Win7 system to Win8 and use a retail Win8 license, then you won't be able to download any Lenovo apps from the MS store.

good to know, that saves me some time. A bum deal to current customers though. I hope these do get released to everyone.

I hope thats a bad joke? Only PCs with preinstalled Windows 8 with completly overloaded software crap will have the Lenovo Metro App? Like every other ThinkPad User I want install Windows 8 as clean install und install drivers from the Lenovo Support page. No chance to get the Lenovo Metro App? How to use WWAN in Windows 8? How to make energy profiles in Windows 8? How to say the battery "do not recharge until ~20%"? Seems like we have to stay Windows 7. Sadly. There is no Intel HD graphics driver for X201 anyway...

It's a limitation on the Windows Store and Lenovo is working on something with Microsoft apparently.

If Lenovo metro app is not available to previous Lenovo customers,  What am I going to miss when I do a clean Windows 8 install on my w520. Am I going to experience a sluggish performance? Or Am I going to miss any drivers?

Drivers no, sluggish performance - not likely. my W530 seems to be stuck lower than high performance though, so hopefully they come through.

I dont think you will experience sluggishness in the case of the apps not being their, it will more be vice versa where apps might be buggy etc. I just dont understand why microsoft would do something with the store that disallows pre windows 8 machines not to use manufacturer specific apps.

I got some more answer from Notebook review forum. Here is the link.

"To clarify, on laptops that ship with Windows 8, those apps don't exist anymore and everything is managed through a Metro-style application called "Lenovo Settings." While the OS runs without these on a thinkpad upgraded to Windows 8, a lot of the Fn hotkeys are now useless and you lose a lot of the benefits Power Manager had over the stock power/battery options.

Additionally, this means you shouldn't install the "Lenovo Settings Dependency" in your laptop's drivers matrix as it does nothing without the metro app."
