Re: ThinkPad software for Windows 8

2013-01-29, 22:20 PM

I've read through this thread and it's pretty disappointing.  I'm using a registry tweak to handle the battery thresholds and doing without Access Connections.  Really a shame.

I got my X1 Carbon with Win7 last week and upgraded it to Win8 (via wipe & clean install) this past weekend and I can't even get the Lenovo apps to manage the machine.

That's pretty bush league.

I don't think that Lenovo is paying any attention at this point.  I have asked for an update from Lenovo, including a possible timeframe for resolution several times, and none of us have heard anything besides they are working on it...I don't think that they are working too hard on it, or care too much because if they couldn't deliver the new Lenovo Settings, than they should be thinking about getting the older Thinkvantage apps certified to work in Windows 8.

If you provide the installer file we can manually edit the registry to allow us to install the application.

That would allow us to install the app now and get our keyboard shortcuts back - I am assuming that is part of what the app does.

"Most mobile platforms recommend you only install apps from approved sources to protect your security, and Windows 8 is the same: it'll only allow you to install trusted (that is, digitally signed) apps from the Windows store.

If this proves a problem, though, and you're willing to take the security risk (because this isn't something to try unless you're entirely sure it's safe), then the system can be configured to run trusted apps from any source.

Launch GPEdit.msc (see above for instructions on how to find it), browse to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > App Package Deployment, double-click 'Allow all trusted apps to install' and select Enabled > OK."

Or someone with a Windows 8 ThinkPad and the cache of installer files could be nice and upload it for us :)

These are issues affecting all OEM's and not just Lenovo.   It takes time to provide updates for an entire product line, and I believe it is a testiment to the thinkpads that so many older systems are still viable.   While you can make some of the older Win7 utilities work in Win8 they are less then optimal and many of them adversely affect system stability.   While I miss some of the Lenovo provided applications, it does not affect my ability to make productive use of my system without them, and I know with time the issues will be worked out and some if not all of the applications will be available again.

Re: ThinkPad software for Windows 8

I have had so many issues that I actually finally deleted my Windows 8 Partition and re-expanded my windows 7 partition and started using it again.  I have installed Windows 8 in a dual boot scenario about 10 different times now and have experienced an extraordinary number of different issue with each install.  One of the on-going issues was video brightness control, which I wonder if it were driver related, or if it would get better with some sort of Lenovo control.  Not only have I experienced video brightness issues, but also video stability, as in watching a video and the video, even if it isn't streaming is quite jumpy like the CPU or the GPU isn't keeping up, even when the system is in Maximum power mode while using the Nvidia GPU.  I have had issues where, even with the latest audio driver, windows blue screens, complaining about the audio card.  What finally sent me over the edge was while using it last night, the USB3 Root hub stopped working and displayed an unable to start message in device manager.  I rebooted, and the same message was displayed.  Not having a Lenovo Windows 8 option, or an updated windows version of the driver, I visited the Lenovo website and downloaded the Windows 7 version and installed it.  That caused the USB3 port to basically function as a USB2 port, so every storage device that I have that is USB3 would pop the message: "This device can work faster..."  Disgusted, I rebooted into Windows 7, accessed my Windows 8 partition and copied anything that I needed to continue working, and paved my Windows 8 partition. I'm operating happly in Windows 7 and will continue to do so until further notice.  I think that the issues aren't with Lenovo at this point, but with Windows 8 itself having so many broken pieces that it is unusable for computers other than ones manufactured after Windows 8 was released (especially the Surface tablet, as you know that Micro$oft probably put most of their eggs into get the OS to operate there).

Wow. You like to write, don't you? :P

I'm using W8 full time, 24/7, with no issues in my S430 and Edge 11. In the E420s is missing the nVidia PXE driver. And that's "all"...

You didn't say what machine you have...

I have T420s - works fine for me minus wanting to round out the app support.

Did anyone read my post from the previous page ?

We can turn the digital signature check off using that registry hack and install the Metro app if someone with a working windows 8 preload would be nice enough to share the app - or Lenovo did :)
