Re: ThinkPad software for Windows 8

2013-02-03, 21:18 PM

I would have no problem uploading my Windows 8 recovery partition to Dropbox and sharing it if a Lenovo representative could tell me whether or not it would be legal to.

Unfortunately the process for installing the Lenovo Windows 8 recovery partition to a blank hard drive is quite annoying. This method is foolproof, so I have found: Get a vanilla Microsoft Windows 8 installation media (USB/DVD/etc) and install Windows 8 normally. If you have a Windows 8 recovery partition from Lenovo (must be a carbon copy) use the Microsoft Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool to copy the recovery partition to a USB. There will be an error at the end because this isn't an installation media, but it doesn't cause any problems. I have found that simply formatting a USB and copying the files over using Windows Explorer works as well.

Windows Key > Reset > "Remove everything and reinstall Windows"

After 10 minutes you should be left with a working installation of Lenovo's OEM Windows 8 on a new hard drive. If you are using an SSD, I recommend you move the Users folder to a HDD using sysprep and the Pagefile using the normal methods.

I don't think we need the whole recovery partition.

We just need the metro app as the rest we can install via system update near enough.

Does the finished install have like DRIVERS or SWTOOLS on the root of the C:\ drive ?

My guess would be the metro app installer would be somewhere in there.

Unfortunately it doesn't work that way.

You can't sideload apps manually.

You can only do it from within an enterprise network where the apps are stored locally, or from the Windows Store.

Not sure how the Windows setup does it. I haven't been able to figure my way around the Windows ADK.

No you can use that app there.

All you need is the APPX file and the CER file and we're good to go.

Are there no APPX/CER files in the preload folders ?

Of course. But you would need the appx. And Lenovo is not providing it (and nobody uploaded it, yet)

I was only responding to your response of "your wrong" - in which you offered no real evidence of how it can be done based upon the lack of conditions the prior post indicated.

just stating "your wrong" really doesn't prove they might be wrong.

Did you read MY post ?

I provided a link to the installer ?

I think you're confusing me with CharlyAR

Anyway back on track - the APPX file must be in SWTOOLS after the preload is deployed no ?

If not here is a way to get an APPX file out of the store

It can only be done on a laptop with access to that package though :
