That last link is volatile - IE there is no point in sharing it as it is time stamped - you would have to download the APPX yourself and then share that - not the link.

If you shared the link it would be inaccessible after a set period of time.

I've just upgraded to Windows 8 on my Lenovo and I have to say that I'm not affected by this issue. Everything works pretty smooth straight out of the box. It looks like MS did a good job with the operating system. :smileylol:

Re: ThinkPad software for Windows 8

So lets sumise here:

1. Win 8 released in October.

2. Threads started that day about how things that worked in the Win 8 preview no longer work in the Win 8 release.

3. After much going-around, it is basically determined that:

     a. There IS a Lenovo app for Windows 8 that replaces the ThinkVantage tools that control WiFi, WWAN, Power Mgmt, etc.

     b. Lenovo put it in the Windows App store as restricted to only show for OEM Lenovo Windows 8 licenses - which are now hard coded into the machine's flash ram.

     c. We are crippled without these apps. WWAN is flaky and you have to install beta drivers to get it working, and power management does not work as expected.

4. Lenovo has stated in this thread (and others) that they are "working on it."

5. The only real solutions seeem to be:

    a. Open the app up so any windows user can download it and install it.

    b. Open the app up so any windows user can download and install it, but have it check for the dependency package or some other breadcrumb that would prevent it from running on a non-lenovo PC.

   c. Release the app as something that any Win 8 user can sideload on their own.

   d. Do nothing.

None of these potential solutions would take 4 months. Even if we caught the dev team in mid-sprint, they can't run 16 week sprints over there. 6? So we are through almost 3 complete sprints now with no indication that anything is happening or even which direction Lenovo is taking in correcting the issue.

I fear that they are going for option d.

The Win 8 eco-system is significantly more complex than you are assuming, and is fundamentally different to the Win 7 (and earlier) MS eco-systems.  It's a voyage of discovery for everyone involved in it, not just the end user customers.

16 weeks. Are we to believe that there is a development team over there working 8 hour days since October to fix this and we have no indication if/when they ever will?

The complexity is that Lenovo locked the app to Lenovo OEM licenses. Microsoft can't fix that. Lenovo needs to either open the app on  the app store, or distribute it outside the app store?

What other complexities are at work here that would afford some 3rd solution or prevent one of these from working?

That would be a great help.

There's a bat file I could make to generate a signing key to go with the appx file and install the appx file all in one go.

Looking into this now :)
