The appx package intercepted by Fiddler is pre-signed with the right signature no ?

Aren't all appx files that are coming directly from the Windows Store pre-signed ? They don't get signed locally, they just get checked for authenticity locally as far as I'm aware.

We'd only need to sign it if we built it ourselves. Hence taking it via Fiddler being ultimately a lot easier and then allowing in store updates to function as the signatures will match.

That's my understanding as well. The appx package will be pre-signed. But the Metro Sideloader is asking for a signing certificate, too. And I guess the cert used for deployment should match the cert previously used for signing the package. But that's a guess, I haven't actually gone through the workflow end to end.

Yes but this:- "http://stackoverflow.com/a/12572211/69742"
as previously pointed out, says you can sort out any local mismatches (temporary/specific to the install on your machine)

So....back to finding an OEM PC,with 20 mins spare time, willing to upload to the unwashed masses.

I managed to compile all three metro apps using MakeAppx utility in VSExpress and self-sign them (if you keep the publisher's name as in the original manifest, then you need to create two self-signing certificates, as the Lenovo Settings app has a different publisher id from the Companion and Support apps).

I suspect others were having problems with MakeAppx because they were just using the original directory names for the apps when extracted - these very long names cause a problem. If you rename the root directory of the app to something like 'test', MakeAppx works with no problem.

All three apps sideloaded on my system with no problem, and each runs. But they don't work perfectly. Power, Camera and Audio options don't display anything in the Settings App. And the system warns me that there are version conflicts with Lenovo Settings and Location Aware. I have the latest version of Lenovo Settings Dependency installed.

Looks like we need the latest update from Windows Store - although the apps indicate they need to be updated, of course I cannot access the updates in Windows Store.

Still, proof of concept.

An new version of Lenovo System Update (5.02 of 02-04-2013) just offered me an update of Settings Dependency Package (version 1.0.5.13 of 02-07-2013). Would that solve the problem?

Likewise, I am looking into this option since the Settings Dependency Package has been released. It shouldn't be long now.

The solution of self signing is very temporary.

We won't get any updates however we would have these apps installed.

I don't really even know what these Metro Apps even do yet to be honest.

But if there's someone with a Windows 8 preloaded machine around and doesn't have the skills to do it, PM me and I can remote in and do it for 20mins via TeamViewer (simple download can be deleted right after the procedure).

Failing that I'll have to find a shop somewhere in London with a Windows 8 preload instock.

Are these apps the same across consumer and business grade Lenovo laptops ?

I'd install it on the preload machine at the bookstore, but our firewalls kill any remote desktop software.

Just a volunteer. Please post your questions in the forum, as I will not reply if they are sent in a personal message.

Re: ThinkPad software for Windows 8

I installed this a couple of days ago from the Chinese driver site and it did remove the warning message about conflicts.

The metro apps still don't work perfectly - the Support App cannot access the serial number and misreports the amount of memory installed (8Gb rather than 16Gb). The Power, Camera and Audio panes of the setting app do not work. Intermittently Support and Settings app demand installation of new driver - they download either depedencypackage.exe or SettingsDependencytp.exe (I suspect that it is by the latter - which I assume is the same as Lenovo Settings Dependency - that Lenovo distinguishes between thinkpads and other systems).

On the other hand, Location Awareness works, but doesn't allow you to store settings for wired connections (in contrast to Access Connections); and mobile hotspot seems to work.

Care to link to the site ?

Were they pre-signed appx ripped from the store or something ?

Isn`t it time that the settings app for Win 8 upgrade became available for download?

The promises made by Lenovo that it will only be a few weeks are becoming a joke.
