Re: ThinkPad software for Windows 8

2013-03-02, 15:17 PM

All I want to know is :Are Lenovo working to release the drivers required for a) Power manager b) swtchable graphics?  Is the reduced battery life a feature of going to WIN8 or the lack of a fix for either of above?  If Thinkpads are win 8 compatble it should not matter who supplies the drivers.  In general I have more faith in the chip manufacturer providing drivers than Lenovo.  My switchable graphics has not worked since an attempted Lenovo update last year (River G  raphics).  I was still in warranty at the time contacted, support twice, could not get a resolution so gave up.  But my battery life was not affected and standard graphics work for me as I do not play games.  The way it is now I will be looking for a new laptop as this one is now running on mains only.  The problem is nobody responds to direct specific questions. The answer is always put it back to the way it was.

Good, to raise some awareness.

I believe that the only thing preventing Lenovo from allowing the metro apps for download is their terms of use.

And this should definitely blow into MSs face.

Lenovo's driver support has always been the #1 reason to use them. Everyone else pretty much sucks. Or, I guess, "sucked." I haven't messed with Dell or anyone for awhile because for years, while their terrible System Update utilities were just terrible; every driver hunt was a serious HUNT. With Lenovo it has always been so easy and generally reliable.

The rule was to just never install a system update right away unless it was to fix a specific bug from a previous system update that you installed too soon. :)

But with this, Lenovo has put themselves back on par with the other guys. And Dell is cheaper now, mostly.

Come on, Lenovo. This topic is HOT. Please can't some of you with the golden tickets actually use one to ping a buddy on the inside and have them look at this? There are so many obvious solutions that would take very little effort. Not the least of which is that none of the app even works without the dependency pack. It's the guts.

Lenovo, why not just post the app twice? Leave what you have alone... Sitting tight in your OEM channel. But now go ahead and publish the app into the generally available space. Why not? Does that cost you money? Why not use a golden ticket with Microsoft to get that money taken care of?

Please?

BTW, everyone, I'm going to start signing my message with this. if anyone else has already posted to the Microsoft forums, then let us know here so we can keep all of these threads alive.

Lets take a step back.

We're on the same side with Lenovo, I hope.

Consider this Lenovo:

This situation is not favouring your loyal cutomer base, the ones that have a say when family and friends ask for what laptop or PC to buy. Alienating us and having a "no comment" stance is not benefiting both.

Can you please have some say on the subject?

Anyone who doesn't mind starting afresh to test this theory could try this :

When making the Windows 8 media for installation

After making the USB key, go into sources on the drive and make a file called ei.cfg

From there enter these details :

[EditionID]

[Channel]
10012071
[VL]
0

Then save it and run the setup, I think Channel needs to either be OEM or Retail but there's no harm in putting the channel ID there and seeing what happens.

Might try this in a VM and see if it works not sure if 10012071 for think and 10012072 for idea systems is the correct channel ID for thinkpads, if it isn't change it to the right one.

EDITED POST to reflect new numbers, testing now in a VM

Ok, I think I was wrong about that specific ID. My bets are on 10012071 for think and 10012072 for idea systems.

Are you sure about the [Channel] part?

Could it be [channelPartner]?

Keep the suggestions coming!

Actually we don't need a bypass - its only a partial solution anyway - there are reports earlier in this topic that only few features of this software actually work on "older" systems by now.

What we truly need is... the official support from Lenovo.
