Upgrade to Windows 7 with XP-downgrade install

2011-12-08, 17:12 PM

We purchased a ThinkPad T510 in 2010 and it came with an XP-downgrade install but licensed for Windows 7.  We would like to upgrade to 7 but don't have the installation discs.  On most PCs and laptops, there is a Windows license sticker with key on the hardware itself but that is missing on this T510.  We don't seem to have any other license information or  COA.

How can we upgrade this laptop to Windows 7?

Did you check for the license (COA) sticker under the battery?

So that's where they were hiding it!  :)  Thanks for the tip.  Is there a Windows 7 install ISO I can download or other system restore ISO from Lenovo?

There's nothing you can download from Lenovo.  You can call support center and request recovery disks for your system, but it costs money in most cases.

There may be places to find Windows 7 install ISO, but I'm sorry I can't help point you to them.

Thanks for the quick replies everybody. We have many Dell Windows 7 Pro install discs laying around (as we have mostly have Dell laptops in our company). I figured those wouldn't work but give it a try anyway. And surpise.. it installed fine and didn't even ask for a license key number.

Thanks again, Windows 7 seems to be running fine now, except for the need to install a few drivers.
