Re: What's with everyone ragging on Vista?

Vista did add so many better features.. just one example: installing a network printer.

Vista: Search for printer, select and click install.

XP: There is no built in way for discovery!  You have to manually add TCP/IP Ports, download drivers and install them.  Takes about 10 times as long and feels so 'old-way'.

Thats all great unless you are trying to connect to a printer connected to another computer using XP.  For some reason, Vista will not network easilly with Windows XP Home Edition.

I think the big difference is that I don't remember XP ever feeling fat.  Win98 just never felt right, but XP on a simple installation that's well maintained always felt responsive.  I like the search and the tablet support within Vista, so I'm not likely to revert to XP, but vista really feels fat, and the start up and shut down times are more than 2x as long on my machines with similar sets of software.

I really do like many of the features of Vista, and it has the potential to be a really good operating system, but its just some of the little things that drive me crazy.  For example, when using Windows Explorer, the top address bar in XP is a drop-down list of the folder layout     ex. My Computer>Documents and Settings > User > My Documents

in Vista, its simply a history of visited pages

Its mainly the small things like that I don't like.

Vista forced me to Mac OS X Leopard.

If a ThinkPad could run Leopard, it would truly be an amazing machine.

Vista is garbage! The Mac commercials are true!

Also, if you look at the sales figures from Lenovo, Vista can be credited for the major drop in sales - that or people are not liking ThinkPads anymore!

Everyone here who likes Vista admits to some form of tweaking. An OS should work properly right out of the box. Why must we tweak registries, create an XP partition to handle certain programs, and modify programs?

Vista does not work well out of the box. That makes it the worst OS on the market today. The massive conversion to Apple illustrates this perfectly.

I eagerly await the new ThinkPad line and Windows 7.

FYI, ThinkPads can run OS X, problem being that it's not legal to do so...

when using Windows Explorer, the top address bar in XP is a drop-down list of the folder layout     ex. My Computer>Documents and Settings > User > My Documents

You can use the arrows in the bar as drop downs. It makes things faster for me because I can jump from one folder to another faster than going back back back when going up the folder levels

Re: What's with everyone ragging on Vista?

Hello to All,
I know this is an old, tired subject but here goes,

Win XP PRO SP3 is a finished, & as good as Microsoft can put togeather an OS.  It only took them 6 years to do it.  Yeah!!!!

To switch to a new OS from Microsoft that will take years to gain Stability, Quality, and the Black Hat Hackers will have finished sending their tracktor trailors in the giant holes in the foundation of the OS, is just plain foolish.

Hasn't anyone learned their painful lessons from before!

Most Vista users are home users or very small businesses.
Even the Microsoft programmers in Redmond program Vista, and Win 7, with XP PRO SP3 Debug or Win 2000.

If you want to play with a computer and run games and send email and watch DVD's etc. then it is fine, Vista can do this.
Just back up your hard drive and use Norton or another quality Pay Virus program.  (Sorry, but you only get what you pay for.)
Find out that most businesses use Norton for their antiVirus software, because it works when you need it.

If you are in business and require what you put into the laptop to stay there and be accessable, then go back to XP PRO SP3 or Linux or Mac.

It is that simple.

I've seen several other people mention Win 7.  And it is true that Win 7 will be an improvement of Vista.
I will load Win 7 for a test after SP2 is out.
Until then it's T61, T9300, 4GB, 320GB, dual boot XP PRO SP3 and SUSE 10.3

I am a systems programmer and have been working in the computer industry since 1974 and can easily say I have forgotten more than I knew, when I was a Computer Science graduate.
Really, the older I get, the more I realize is, "Keep it simple, and don't forget the painful lessons of the past in this industry."

Blessings,
Chetanji

Well said, Chetanji!

That is the best comment that I have ever read on Vista!

Thanks!
