Try the deployment guide. It has a link to a microsoft help page. I had to restart my machine to see the apps. NOTE: Lenovo settings app will show an update to v2.x via the app store if you install v1.x.

I am not sure what you're talking about.  Can you post a screenshot showing Lenovo Settings 2.x?

SomeOtherGuy:

I think there is relativly widespread confusion amongst many of us about the "Metro" Lenovo Settings app and and the conventional "Lenovo  Solutions Center" application.  The Lenovo Solutions Center application is currently at version 2.0.020, and a splash screen appears showing this version number whenever it is launched.

As for the "Metro" app - the "Lenovo Settings" app - I have no idea what version it is at, because I have not yet figured out how to pull up an 'about' screen for these Meto apps.

By the way - thanks for all your contributions here in the forum, they are greatly appreciated.

You can find the version number of any Metro app as follows:

1.  open the Metro app

2.  open the Charm Bar  (e.g. swipe from the right edge, or winkey-C)

3.  click on Settings

4.  click on About

5.  application Name, Version, and Author is displayed

Re: Windows 8 Metro Settings App Lacks Almost All Functions

SomeOtherGuy:

Thanks very much for explaining how to find the version of a Metro app.  I checked my "Lenovo Settings" Metro app and discovered that it is at version 1.1.0.11788.  Jeepers, I feel sorry for the programmers at Lenovo - eleven thousand seven hundred and eighty-eight iterations of an application - I guess those folks haven't been getting many days off lately.  :smileysurprised:

I'm a bit surprised at how non-intuitive the process of identifying a Metro app version is.  I suppose the process conforms to the "global concept" that Microsoft has for the Windows 8 OS - the idea that one should go to the charm bar for information - but, heck, it takes 3 input actions (clicks) to get to the version number, compared to (typically) one click only in the pre-Windows 8 world.

If I may offer a suggestion to Lenovo, perhaps you could show the version number and corresponding release date by default in the upper right area of the main screen of this app.  There is more than enough space for it up there (Metro apps seem to have a lot of blank screen space in them), and doing that would make it easier for all of us to keep track of what is going on.

FYI, the only reason I upgraded to Windows 8 was to get native OS support for 4K Advanced Format Sector drives that are >2 TB.  Windows 8 provides that, and I am happy.  I'm also pleased that Windows 8 boots faster than Windows 7 did.  But...

I'm not entirely convinced that all of the massive paradigm changes that Microsoft made to user interaction with the new OS have brought corresponding benefits.  In my line of work, I am responsible for human factors considerations in aircraft flight compartment and avionics design.  One of the guiding principles in this work is "keep it simple" - in other words, make it as easy and intuitive as possible for the pilot to carry out an action, especially if it is not a common action.

Based on my last few months experience with Windows 8, I sure hope that Microsoft never diversifies into building aircraft...

To : Someotherguy

I have an L420. When load the Lenovo settings dependency package, my L420 freezes as soon as it switches off the DVD Rom. DVD is the OPTIARC DVD RW AD-7710H with fimware 1.50. The L420 cannot any longer be shut down after loading the dependency package. It hangs indefinitely.

The evenlog shows all kind off issues: Reseting IASTOR, Chrome error (do not have it), Firefox error (do not have it), all and of DCOM errors.

When I remove the dependency package everything works ok again.

I can live with a lot of eventlog error possibly created with a non-WIN8 compatible BIOS, but I cannot live with SW that destroys the system. It is also not good to reload a backup on my SSD after everytime there is a new version of a SW that screws up the system. Pls. look into both Hotkey Functions SW and Settings Dependency Package.

Is Lenovo not testing the SW they release and offer for specific products? The L420 is claimed by Lenovo to be WIN8 compatible.

Win + I to open Charms bar settings and there You have the "About" option ;)

And regarding the app itself - am I just blind or is it not possible to set charging tresholds for the battery?

MINA2,

>> I have an L420. When load the Lenovo settings dependency package, my L420 freezes as soon as it switches off the DVD Rom.

I'm not aware of this problem so I'll have to check on it.

>> The evenlog shows all kind off issues: Reseting IASTOR, Chrome error (do not have it), Firefox error (do not have it), all and of DCOM errors.

I'm not sure what the IASTOR error means, maybe it has something to do with your problem about optical drive.  The other errors are all meaningless and harmless.  They will be fixed in an upcoming release of Lenovo Settings Dependency Package.

>> The L420 is claimed by Lenovo to be WIN8 compatible.

"Compatible" means it should work, and that we are not aware of a case why it won't work.  But nobody in Lenovo is specifically testing L420 running Win8.  L420 is a Win7 logo system.  If you find bugs with Win8 then we can handle them as bugs, e.g. try to repro and make fixes as needed.

It's not possible.  Right now that is Win7-only feature.  Some forum users have posted a way to do it (hacking) that is not supported and may cause side-effects.
