Windows activation key

2011-03-19, 1:17 AM

Hello,

I recently reformatted my computer. I have a T500 and I went from vista to a windows 7 upgrade cd (supplied

by lenovo). I realize now (too late) that the product key  information from  the sticker on my laptop for my vista installation

is rubbed off. Is there any other way I can find my product key? Do I need a separate key for my upgrade? I couldn't find one

on the envelope that the disc was in. I have recently moved and things are in boxes all over the place so I am

not sure if there should be one there that I have misplaced. I know that I am an idiot for not verifying all of this stuff before

I clean formatted everything.

Thank you for your time.

There is normally a separate one on the upgrade

Need to clarify what exactly you did when using the window 7 upgrade disc. There is normally two choices, upgrade or custom install

Did you upgrade the vista which in this case there should be a window.old folder which still contains the vista serial information.

If you did a pure format and install the window 7, then most of the information would have been erased.  But since you must have done a recovery media backup when you were using the vista, you can still get vista back and that serial information.

If you have done no backup at all in your life, then perhaps this is a good wakeup call.

So now only window 7 is on the system, which you should have the serial number on the upgrade CD. If you really want the vista back and you still have warranty, send it back to lenovo, explained what happened and perhaps they will install vista partitions back.

if you still have windows vista, you can use 3rd party applications to learn your serial key

if you are trying to activate win.7 upgrade without vista installed it won't work the upgrade version of 7 requires that vista is installed & the key that is in the OEM preinstalled vista is not going to work for activating vista

I received a T61p with Vista Business and an W7 upgrade disc from Lenovo. The upgrade disc had an COA attached with license number.

After totally killing the hard drive I was able to clean install W7 on the T61p using the license number supplied with the upgrade disc. Online activation was no problem at all.

Not true at least if you have Lenovo upgrade disks.  They can do a clean install.  I upgraded from Vista to Win 7 by installing a brand new SSD and inserting the CD.  Got an old HD around here with Vista someplace...

Thanks for your help. I do have a system backup that I guess I can use as a last resort. Now I know to dig through my boxes

and find the windows 7 validation. It helps knowing that it exists so I don't feel as though I am searching in vain. I guess the loss of my vista key is pretty irrelevant since I will never run it on my system

There should be a Windows 7 key with the Lenovo supplied  2 disk upgrade set.

I don't have my disk set in front of me right now, but IIRC, the key in an upgrade COA attached to the disk sleeve.

I'll check when I get home.....

Cheers,

Bill
