X240 cannot do the system recovery

2014-01-29, 1:26 AM

Hi folks,

i bought a brand new x240 with windows 8, but when i want to recover the system by press F11 during boot process, it told me i should insert the recovery disc/media. So, i doubt my recovery partition was broken.

I look the disk management again, and found that the recovery partition is 100% free without any data, i'm not sure whether the windows 8 can show the percentage correctly or not.

Then, i want to create a recovery disc from windows 8 control panel, but again, it told me some required files are missing that i can't create.

What can I do? Pls help me!

Hello wisnzh,

You really can't see any data in the recovery partition, because it's hidden. With Win 8, the recovery is handled by creating a recovery USB drive. Please see this page on how to create the recovery drive:

http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=HT076024

"Once the Recovery Media creation has completed, there is the option to delete the recovery partition.  On most systems, this partition is about 10G in size.  Lenovo strongly recommends that this recovery partition remain intact as shown below..."

Cheers

Thank you for your reply, but when I click the "create the recovery drive" the system told me some required files are missing, and I'm sure I didn't delete any system file.
So what can I do?

THANK YOU!

Please post a screen shot of the error that you are receiving, and a shot of your Disk Management, showing your current drive structure.

Also, did you change anything in the drive structure, or get rid of, what you considered to be, bloat ware?

Cheers

Hi wisnzh,

Well you have me at a loss, as I don't have the X240. I could only give you some general help regarding the Win 8 recovery system.

Have you tried everything in your user manual, starting at page 60?

http://www.lenovo.com/shop/americas/content/user_guides/x240_ug_en.pdf

Did you create a "System Repair Disk" when you set up your system?

Repair.PNG

You might try that.

As a last resort, you could do a paper clip reset. That should restore your computer to it's original factory configuration. However, if you're missing some files that are needed for the restore, you may need to order the restore CDs from Lenovo. Also, the reset will erase all of your data, and the laptop would be just like it came from the factory.

Sorry I can't be more help. Maybe some other user will chime in. :smileyfrustrated:

Cheers

wisnzh,

I'm a little bit confused. :smileyindifferent:

I don't think you gave us enough information.  Are you trying to create the Win 8 recovery media, before you upgrade to Win 8.1, and this is where you're having the problem? Or, did you already attempt to upgrade your X240 to Win 8.1, without creating the recovery media, then the 8.1 upgrade failed, and you want to revert back to Win 8?

AFAIK If the 8.1 upgrade fails, you should have the ability to automatically go back to Win 8.

Also, there is a command that will fix corrupted system files. If you haven't tried it, run this command  "SFC /SCANNOW" (without the quotes) . Open the command prompt as the administrator, run the command, and close the window when finished. Google on the command for more info. It may help with the problem you listed in your first post.

To answer your latest question, no. You have to contact Lenovo Support via a phone call, to have them send you the recovery media, based on your serial number. Your Lenovo OEM installation of the OS is not interchangeable. The OS key is in your BIOS. If you attempt to load any other "image" of Win 8, the key won't be valid in your system.

Please specify exactly what you're looking for, and why.  It's important to know what you did, that possibly created the problem, and what you've tried to fix it.

Cheers
