Z61p -XP Pro 32 to Win7 Pro 64 using SMA?

2009-10-24, 1:06 AM

Can I use System Migration Assistant to transfer system and program settings between these two configurations?

I'll be saving the file to a flash drive or something since I'm having to do a clean install.  I'd like to give this a go tomorrow and so I've downloaded the Win7 SMA to begin.

Any ideas, suggestions or note of things to be concerned about are welcomed. Thanks.

You shouldn't have a problem at all.

Run SMA in capture mode on the old PC, save the file to your flash drive (assuming it fits -- there will likely be a LOT of data there), then install Windows.  Reinstall SMA.

If you install your programs first (like Office), it will put the settings into place.  If you install your programs after you run SMA in apply mode, you won't get as good of a result.  (e.g. there are no Office or Outlook or Acrobat settings in the registry to modify).

The clean install went well and all of my personalized program settings were easily transferred with the ThinkVantage System Migration Assistant (SMA).
