should i delete SERVICEV003 partition during windows 7 upgrade?

2009-11-11, 2:35 AM

I made the R&R discs and deleted all of the partitions except for the SERVICEV003 partition.  did a custom upgrade, however everytime i reboot the windows boot manager appears, listing RAMDISK OPTIONS as an OS.  i'm thinking this might be from the SERVICEV003 partition.  Can I safely delete this partition before the upgrade?

well, for what it's worth, i deleted the partition and installed windows 7 on a 'clean' drive.  i'm kind of guessing that my blue "thinkvantage' button won't work at boot...  this isn't a problem really, since i would always use images to restore partitions anyhow.  i'm also assuming that I could restore this partition again using the 3 R&R discs I made from the lenovo partition.

i'll report back once the install is complete.  I really wish someone with more experience would chime in, however :)

Hey Nonlinear,

I have been wondering the same thing for a while now, but I do not have my upgrade media yet.  I agree with you that many uncertainties haven't properly been addressed, and I wish there were a place to get some clear answers.

Could you tell us how everything goes once you finish installing?  I'm curious to know whether the Thinkvantage button works after deleting the paritions.  If not, I wonder whether it's possible to make it work using the software included on the second disc (the Lenovo-specific disc).

I have already upgraded from Vista to Windows 7. The ThinkVantage button did not work anymore, but after installing the ThinkVantage Toolbox, it works fine.

After the upgrade to Win7, the SERVICEV003 partition which had the drive letter S:, now does not have a drive letter assigned anymore, but is still existing.

Can someone from Lenovo please confirm that we can use this partition for other purposes now?

I've kept this partition; however, if you want to disable the startup boot option, as albatrossNY told me in another post, you can do it in Control Panel > System & Security > System, Advanced system settings option on left, Startup and Recovery choice.

I left the SERVICE003 and LENOVO partitons intact. I liked the option of having the

Pre Windows diagnostics environment via F11 at boot time if needed.

After doing a Custom (clean) install of Windows 7 the F11 no longer boots to the

Pre Windows Desktop.

Is there any way to restore this functionality?
