x61s upgrade from XP to windows 7

2011-11-25, 22:27 PM

Hi there,

my (loved) X61s is now working with windows XP but, little by little, slower and slower (mostly Outlook). I'm thinking about upgrading it to Windows 7 but actually I don't know if this laptop (Intel Core 2 Duo L7500 , 1.6GHz; 781 MHz and 1,96 GB RAM) is ok for doing it.

It's time of crisis so spending more money in upgrading hw is difficult....

Thanks in advance for any answer.

Alfonso

Hi Alfonso,

My X60s with less memory and not so speedy processor ran Win 7 very well. In my opinion, your ThinkPad is more than capable of handling Win 7, maybe along the road you can add more memory. Please be aware that only 64-bit version supports 4GB RAM, and 32-bit only 3GB.

After installing Windows 7, you can install drivers through ThinkVantage System Update:- http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=TVSU-UPDATE

Hope this helps.

Hi Maliha,

many thanks for your help, honestly.  Lenovo hotline (i finally found the phone number!!) told me this morning W-7 was not going to work with my current configuration (2MB RAM, 1+1) and they have no idea about what would happen if I upgrade it to 3MB (2+1) and try W-7 (...so finding the #number was not very useful). Following your answer, would you say is better to try a 3MB configuration with W-7 32 bits rather than going directly to 4 MB (2+2) and try W-7 64 bits. Second: How will be affected my current software (the typical: MS-Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader 8, nero, WinDVD, DivX, etc and hp-drivers), should i change any other thing (sw/hw) to start working.

Additional memory: Apparently it should be 2GB PC2-5300 DDR2 SODIMM Topseller 40Y7735 (new), 43R2000 (old)

Processor is Intel Core 2 Duo LV L7500.

I realize the scope of my question is broad ... any help witll be an advance for me (I'm an economist...not a technician...;( ).

Regards, Alfonso

Hi Alfonso,

http://windows.microsoft.com/upgradeadvisor

Download and run Microsoft Upgrade Advisor and it will tell you of any issues with hardware and existing software and any changes you might have to make.

Many thanks for the link. I'll follow it.

By the way, what's the meaning of "2-x60ts Windows 7 Pro, u160, 2-x32s, 3-x41 tablets,
2-x41 non-tablets, 2-x40s"?

Regards,

Alfonso
