Some Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 users are reporting they can't check for updates using Windows Update and Microsoft Update. No word yet on a Microsoft fix.
My opinion: I feel that rather than messing around in the Windows Registry and attempting various tweaks, it may be best to be patient and wait for a Microsoft fix.

This is my standard answer for this problem:
Update servicing stack: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=46817
Then apply this: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=53332
Then retry windows update

Rumor has it that if you set your computer's date temporarily to one prior to December 3, 2017, the Windows updates will succeed. I cannot verify that myself, but apparently that is a workaround that others say does work until Microsoft updates the expiration date on their end.

It appears that Microsoft has fixed the issue.
To be specific, apparently they fixed the expiration date in the http://ds.download.windowsupdate.com/v11/2/microsoftupdate/redir/v6-muauth.cab file
