On a ThinkPad running Vista SP1, you cannot defragment exFAT removable media

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a Lenovo ThinkPad computer that is running Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1).
  • You connect an UltraBay hard disk drive to the computer by using the Lenovo ThinkPad Second HDD Adapter for UltraBay.
  • You try to use the Extended file allocation table (exFAT) file system to format or to defragment the media in the UltraBay drive.

In this scenario, the format user interface (UI) does not support this formatting or defragmentation operation.
