ThinkPad software for Windows 8

To any ThinkPad customer who is considering upgrading from Win7 to Win8, I want to let you know that the following Windows 7 software does not exist for Windows 8:

1.  Access Connections

2.  Power Manager

3.  Rescue and Recovery

4.  Communications Utility

If you rely on any of the above software, then you may want to consider whether upgrading from Win7 to Win8 makes sense for you.  With a few exceptions, all of the functions of the above apps are replaced by native features of Win8.  Other functions are replaced by Lenovo-specific Metro Windows Store applications, but due to how the Windows store is implemented, these apps are not available to Win7->Win8 upgrade customers.  We are currently investigating the possibility to make the Metro Windows Store applications available to all customers, but nothing has been finalized as of now.

Correct.  As of now you will not be able to install the metro app that requires this package.  And the package by itself does not do anything.

Re: ThinkPad software for Windows 8

Kinda sad. I was looking forward to replacing all the clutter with one app. Hopefully Lenovo will be able to release the app for everyone. I quite like windows 8 on my w530.

Re: ThinkPad software for Windows 8

Another reason to just do a clean install. It kind of sucks though that they couldnt just submit them to the appstore which basically makes little sense. Ill just have to wait and see though a thinkpad without its core applications is no thinkpad at all Smiley Happy

Re: ThinkPad software for Windows 8

Why is the power manager unavailable? It works on Windows 8 definitvly and there is also the power manager for the ThinkCentres, which works on Windows 8 (http://support.lenovo.com/de_DE/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-70967).

Why is it impossible to install the metro app on a upgraded system?

How can we manage the battery things in the future? Windows alone lacks some features of the power manager Smiley Sad

Its a Microsoft issue with the way the app store is currently designed to work.... something that MS hadn't thought through very well.

Expect to see some more things like this arise in terms of the Win 8 eco-systemi!

Cheers,

Bill

Re: ThinkPad software for Windows 8

The only way I can get games to run with any kind of performance is to hit the turbo boost in the power manager, and crank the bar to high performance. without that, for some reason everything lags.

Re: ThinkPad software for Windows 8

Hello,

I think this is an issue which is not specific to Lenovo but rather one which all computer manufacturers are struggling with—at least those which have made the investment in providing modern Windows Store (formerly Metro) apps for Microsoft Windows 8.

I suspect, though, that both Microsoft and its hardware ecosystem partners are working on a resolution to this and expect it to eventually be solved.

In the meantime, if you are planning on installing Windows 8, I would suggesting purchasing your copy before the promotion pricing ends in January 2013, even if you don't plan on installing it until later.

Regards,

Aryeh Goretsky
