Symptoms

When you use the Windows Update Web site or Automatic Updates, you are not offered the option to install Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3).

Important This article helps you fix the problem in which you are not offered the option to install Windows XP SP3 when you use Windows Update or Automatic Updates. This article does not address Windows XP SP3 installation issues that might occur when Windows Update or Automatic Updates does offer Windows XP SP3 to you.

Diagnosis

The following conditions are true:

  • Your computer uses an AMD processor. Additionally, the copy of Windows XP that is running on your computer was deployed by using an Intel-based Windows image.
  • Your computer previously used an Intel processor. Additionally, your computer is running Windows XP. Then, you later upgraded your computer to use an AMD processor.
You have one of the following Symantec products installed:
  • Norton System Works
  • Norton 360
  • Norton AntiVirus 2008
  • Symantec Endpoint Protection
Additionally, the version of the Symevent.sys file is earlier than 12.5.4.1.
How to determine the version of the Symevent.sys file
Open the following folder:
%Windir%\System32
Right-click the Symevent.sys file, and then click Properties.
In the Symevent.sys Properties dialog box, click the Version tab.
On the Version tab, notice the version number next to File version.
  • Open the following folder : %Windir%\System32
  • Right-click the Symevent.sys file, and then click Properties.In the Symevent.sys Properties dialog box
  • click the Version tab.On the Version tab, notice the version number next to File version.
