Windows activation key

I bought my Lenovo laptop with preinstalled Windows 8.1.

About a year ago some problems accoured and I consulted with IT specialist, he reinstalled Windows and my computer worked just fine after that. About a month ago computer showed a message indicating that Windows is not activated. I opened computer settings and it showed an error 0x8007007B.

The problem is that I don't know where my product key is. I conntacted Microsoft support and they said that I don't have correct OIM (or OEM?) and that the reinstallation proccess was made wrongly.

Is it possible to get the product key / license or something that helps me re-activate Windows 8.1?

Re: Windows activation key

Hi JanaC,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

There are some software like showkeyplus and alike that may be useful but not accurate in most times since OEM product keys are embedded in the BIOS similar to this discussion that you can attempt.

We are hoping that factory reset features through One Key Recovery was not removed by your IT to restore it back to its original version. You need to back up your data if the case may need reinstallation of the original Windows version.

If you haven't created a recovery media then ordering it through Lenovo maybe an option.

Re: Windows activation key

Most of the Product Key of Windows 8 and above are digitally activated. It means that Microsoft has the hardware code, and you are able to re-install without Product Key. In this case, you can do the following:

First, you can download the Windows 8.1 ISO from Microsoft directly and follow the instruction.

Second, you have to backup your entire drive, e.g. GHOST, and not just files and data.

Third, try to run setup.exe at USB Flash drive/DVD for Upgrade. It may retain the programs and settings.

If the Upgrade option is not available, too bad, you have to perform the Clean Install, which will wipe your drive completely.

After you re-install, you should able to activate. If not, either you can buy Windows 10 via Microsoft Store, or restore the backup.

Hope it helps.

Re: Windows activation key

Make sure that the specialist installed the correct version of the OS.  If he installed the Pro version and your machine had the Home version installed originally, then the Key will be wrong and it won't activate.
