Windows auto updates - can I opt out?

My laptop is running Windows 8. I don't wish for it to be automatically upgraded to later versions. Is there a way for me to choose when my system is upgraded?

There are indeed options for you to choose from as to when you want your version of Windows to be updated (that is, if there are any updates.)

Go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Windows Update\Change settings

You will see four options in the dropdown menu:

Option 1 automatically detects the latest updates and installs these on your laptop, desktop or tablet automatically.

Option 2 downloads updates but no changes are made. You can read what updates or changes there are and decide if you want to install them.

Option 3 does not download any updates, except for information about the latest changes. You have the option of downloading the changes before installation.

Option 4 neither checks for nor download new updates. This is not recommended, in any case.
