Question

Action Center might show backup as "Monitoring Windows Backup through Action Center has been turn off by an administrator or another program.” even though Windows Backup has been configured; what does this mean?

Answer

In Windows 7, Windows Backup relies on Action Center to for communicating its status to users. It uses it both to recommend users to set up a backup, and uses it to send any backup related notifications to users once the backup schedule is configured. This notification setting can be disabled through a registry key by another program. If you want to reset this key so Action Center can monitor your backup and report status, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Start button.
  2. In the search box type regeidt and then press Enter.
  3. Navigate to this key:

HKEY_LPCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsBackup\DisableMonitoring

4.  Set the value to 0
