Re: SOLVED! WAN Miniport #2 yellow exclamation mark in Device Manager

I did the steps summarized on  this page:

- Update drive for WAN Miniport (SSTP) to Generic Mobile Broadbank Adapter

- Uninstall Generic Broadbank Adapter

- Reboot

- Reboot

- Download Windows Driver Kit 7.1.0

- Get devcon.exe for i386

- At an Administrator Command Prompt I run C:\Temp>devcon.exe install c:\windows\inf\netsstpa.inf MS_SstpMiniport and I receive the message "devcon.exe failed." with no further explanation.

-  I reboot 2 additional times and WAN Miniport (SSTP) is not in Device Manage.

Thank you in advance.

I was using the devcon.exe for Windows XP so I retrieved the correct devcon.exe for Windows 8.1 and received the following message:

Device node created.  Install is complete when drivers are installed. Updating drivers for MS_SstpMiniport from c:\windows\inf\netsstpa.inf.  devcon.exe failed.

WAN Miniport (SSTP) still shows up in Device Manager with the yellow exclamation point.

Re: SOLVED! WAN Miniport #2 yellow exclamation mark in Device Manager

I've posted because my solution finished up to be slightly different. (Windows 8.1)

Looking at Device Manager after a reboot, there were no yellow exclamation marks.

If I then attempted to view my VPN's properties(it's on WAN Miniport (PPTP)) or tried to connect to the VPN then the "Network adapters" section of Device Manager dropped down and displayed 4 or so WAN Miniports (xyz) featuring yellow exclamation marks.

The list would remain there for a minute or so until the connection attempt timed out, leaving just a single WAN Miniport (SSTP) #2 with the error marker.

I fixed that one using the overwrite/uninstall and rebooted.

On rebooting, and testing, the VPN failed to connect but WAN Miniport (SSTP) #2 was ok this time. So I had to work quickly and do the same fix to all the other failing Miniports (without rebooting between them) before the connection attempt timed out.

Next time I rebooted, all Miniports were fixed and I could connect to the VPN ok.

Thanks for help :)

It worked for me, too! If everything is _really_ fine in the innermost parts of Windows is another question...

Only to add:

Normal devices like wifi or lan adapters can be easily repaired by deinstalling them (don't check the "remove driver completely box"!). Afterwards search for new devices or do a reboot. Now they should be automatically reinstalled. If not, download the latest driver and install it.

For the WAN Miniport devices follow this manual:

Fabulous! It worked fine.
I had tried so many solutions from other websites, to no avail.
Now I can finally use my VPN.

Hey guys,

Really starting to loose some hair over this one. I have tried the suggested procedure (as others I don't have MAC miniport however I do not have a generic broadband option either). I tried to select various other WAN miniprt options however I get the an error "The data is invalid". This is as far as I can get ... any ideas ... please?
