Microsoft Windows 8 Updates may fail to apply

2012-11-20, 14:20 PM

SYMPTOM:

After downloading Windows Updates and rebooting, the system will attempt to apply the updates and fail. The error message, “Failure configuring Windows updates”, will display at 15 percent. The system will attempt to apply the updates three times and then the system will revert the changes and reboot back into Microsoft Windows 8.

AFFECTED CONFIGURATIONS:

- The above symptom is associated with, but not limited to, the following systems:

ThinkCentre

ThinkStation

ThinkPad

Idea Tablet

IdeaPad

IdeaCentre

- The system is configured with: Nitro Pro 7.4.1.24 PDF, or below

APPLIES TO: Microsoft Windows 8

SOLUTION:

A critical patch will be available, in the future, on Lenovo System Update to correct this issue.

Also, an update from Nitro Pro 7 PDF will be available from Update Manager to update the Nitro PDF to version 7.5 which corrects this issue.

WORKAROUND:

The user can disable the Nalpeiron Licensing Service in Services by following the steps below:

1. Press Windows key + X.

2. Click on Run.

3. Type “services.msc” in the Open box and click OK.

4. In the right pane of the Services window, scroll down and locate “Nalpeiron Licensing Service”.

5. Right click on “Nalpeiron Licensing Service”, choose “Stop”, and then close the Services window.

6. Open Windows Updates and Install updates. When prompted, reboot the system. Updates should then apply normally.

NOTE: These steps will need to be followed whenever Windows Updates are available until the patch or the new version is applied to the system.

The fixed version has been posted

Launch Nitro Pro

wait for a few secoonds

You will see a "update manager" pop-up informing you of a new version

Click on "Install update"

This update will upgrade your version of Nitro Pro to 7.5.0.29

After upgrading to the above version windows update should start working.

I am experiencing this problem right now. How will we know when the patch is available?

Not sure the answer is quite that easy, as I removed Nitro Pro PDF a while back, and I have this issue as well.

Assuming that this service remains after the program has been uninstalled, will disabling the service correct the issue?

Thanks,

I have performed the update to Nitro Pro, but the problem still exists. This is a new desktop I had to exchange the previous one after three weeks because of this problem.

I had this problem and found a suggestion which worked for me on another website, which is to disable all non Microsoft services via MSconfig and then install the updates.
