Can’t find a downloaded file

2017-10-30, 12:06 PM

I downloaded an exe file from Microsoft edge on my Lenovo yoga laptop that has Windows 10 and was able to access it by viewing my downloads from the internet. However something happened that caused the downloads history to be cleared. So I don’t know where to access my file. It is not in the downloads folder so I have no idea where to access the file.

Try downloading any file again and see where is the default download destination :)

Also you can search for the downloaded file name in your file explorer.

You should be able to find out where dowloaded files are going by looking in your browser settings. You can then choose a different default destination if you wish.  In Edge you'll have to look in advanced settings - in most other browsers it's in general settings.

By default they will usually go to the downloads folder in your user folder. Look in My PC>Folders>Downloads.

In some circumstances files will be downloaded into hidden locations in the users folders but this is usually during program installations or when files are only intended to be viewed only from within the browser.

It says in advanced settings that files go in my user downloads folder. I checked there and it says that the folder is empty. So the file is probably in a hidden location. I will check it out by downloading a file again and seeing where it goes.

Just make sure you have read the path as well as just the folder name. There may be other folders named "Downloads" in different places. For example some programs may have their own downloads folder in the main program folder or in their App Data folder (which is hidden as I recall).

Just remembered it's an exe file. It may have gone into a temp file to be run automatically and then possibly been deleted.

Also, I wonder whether windows may have decided it was unsafe and hidden or deleted it. It may help to know what the actual file is.

I doubt that this is anything to do with it being a new laptop. As I said before, some software downloads go to a temporary location to be run from there. They may then be deleted after the installation process or left somewhere on hard drive but that location could be a hidden file and/or buried somewhere in your user folder or a system location. I don't like it myself when it happens, but that's how it is.
