Re: Miix 700 - issues after updating folio keyboard firmware

2017-05-23, 6:50 AM

That's interesting you find reseting the computer fix the problem. I've reset it everytime I send it back and problem still occurs.  I'm about 3 months out from my warranty end so have to decide if I shld send back once more and ask for refund.  It's too bad cuz I was pretty happy with it until I updated the firmware.  Now I won't be able to get similar machine for the price I paid which was quite good... And I won't be able to buy a similar one with the refund they give.  I'm using the windows driver now and get by ok except it doesnt have scroll function n palm detection which sometimes its a drag

For those of you havin trouble with the trackpad on the Miix 700 after the Creators Update:

I fixed my problem (lag, unresponsiveness) by playing around with the sensitivity and palm measure settings within the Elan program settings > Additional tab.

Just playing around with the sliders, applying settings several times and the problem is gone for me.

Good luck!

What settings are you using to make it go away?  I think many people have tried changing settings with minimal improvement.  So if it worked, how you adjusted it will be helpful.

Re: Miix 700 - issues after updating folio keyboard firmware

[Sorry- someone seems to have already posted about this, but can't find the delete button]

This reply may be a bit late, but in C:\Program Files\Elantech\, there is a file called ETDDeviceInformation.exe, which gives you information about the touchpad.

It can track up to 5 fingers, each with 3 values: [Position] [H] and [MK]. [Position] gives you the coordinates [x, y] of each finger, and [MK] gives you two values, but I don't yet know what.

More interesting to this issue is the [H] value, which tells you the size of the finger on the touchpad. It has a range of 0-255. When this equals 0, the cursor does not move- probably a software design choice to prevent accidental input. Interestingly, this only occurs when one finger is on the touchpad, and seems to work fine when more than one is added, although software behaviour means that the cursor will not actually move. Go to https://youtu.be/THIznmMUxcA

Because of the input I am seeing, which I assume is essentially raw input, it may actually be a hardware, not a software issue. A driver update could enable cursor movement when [H] equals 0 and there is only one finger, but there will probably be consequences on this- the current behaviour is probably there for a reason.

That would explain why there isn't a fix yet. I guess we can't be sure, but if it is indeed a hardware defect then it's bad as we are stuck with it. As a customer I would like to see Lenovo finally step in and aknowledge the problem - if it's fixable they should fix it, otherwise they should offer a full refund for every single Miix 700 sold, no questions asked.

Needless to say I am not buying Lenovo again, Microsoft just launched the updated Surface which I agree is expensive, but if it is on par (quality-wise) with the 4 then it is well worth its price. Plus the upgraded specifications. I will get one of those next and never look back.

I just wonder about all the people who have been buying the Miix 720 lately (as many or few as they are). Almost as expensive as the Surface, and already plagued by problems (see fan speed thread). What a terrible joke...

"a full refund for every single Miix 700 sold, no questions asked." = exactly. But fat chance. They really messed up on this one, but seem incapable of admitting it, or doing anything about it. They have lost a huge amount of goodwill along with not a few customers. Not very clever at all. I've been left completely amazed at how poorly they have dealt with this. I mean really amazed. Just dreadful.

For those who want a refund, you shld be able to as they did offer me refund before when I send back for repair and they couldn't fix it.  I highly doubt there will be a "recall" like for cars.

So I actually contacts Lenovo again and ask them what's going on and interestingly the support guy suggested maybe replacing the keyboard as there's no way he found to downgrade the firmware.  So depending if the firmware is flashed to the keyboard or just some windows thing... It may fix the problem  as it was working fine for me before the firmware.

Re: Miix 700 - issues after updating folio keyboard firmware

I found a way to downgrade from V001 to V0009, after many unsuccesful attempts. (at your own risk)

Step 1. Get the V001 and V0009 firmwares.

V001: Grab miix700-12isk_folio_fw_v001.exe from the Lenovo website

V0009: You should be able to find chelsea_folio_fw_v0009.exe in the first few google search results

If you are currently on V001, then downgrade to V0009 is not possible (if you run the chelsea exe, the "update" button will be greyed out). However, there is a workaround.

Step 2. Unzip these two files to separate folders.

Step 3. Copy EFORMAT.INI, HIDDLL.dll, ISPDLL.dll, USB Keyboard.MTP from the v0009 folder to the V001 folder. Overwrite existing files.

Step 4. From the (modifed) V001 folder, run KBFW.exe. Click on the red Update button. This is it.

If you check the firmware version by re-running the V001 firmware update utility, you can see the current version is V0009.

The V0009 is out-of-the-box but it's not perfect. There won't be any sluggish cursor issue as with V001 but the cursor can be too sensitive occasionally. Also, the Elan driver won't work and uninstalling this driver makes the touchpad more stable.

I wonder what that folio utility does.  It's not a firmware?  My folio was working fine before with Elan until the latest firmware... so I wonder if downgrading with the method just posted would work.  You seem to figure out a way to downgrade even Lenovo couldn't.  I am supposed to get the new keyboard today.  Will see if that will fix the problem as well.
