Re: Miix 700 - issues after updating folio keyboard firmware

2017-06-11, 6:37 AM

First of all a big thank you to lewislee999 for sharing with us the firmware downgrade method, a great find! I followed the descrription and downgraded mine fron 001 to 0009, and here are the results:

  • I don't experience lag anymore, the pointer is snappier when moving.
  • Two finger vertical and horizontal scrolling works.
  • Pinch zoom works.
  • Tap once to zoom in browser works.
  • There is no need to remove the Elan driver, just make sure to reboot after the firmware is done flashing and your touchpad works again. After the reboot the driver is inactive as it doesn't recognize the touchpad anymore. You can make sure of that if you go to the Elan setup tab, you will see that the device list where previously the touchpad appeared is now empty.
  • I had to decrease both pointer movement speed and number of lines scrolled by the scrolling wheel, as with the default windows driver they were both too fast. I set the number of scrolling lines to 1 (down from 3),and the pointer speed pretty low too.
  • Innertial scrolling doesn't work anymore. Now the scrolling is proportional to your finger's  movement, and if you scroll above a certain speed the scrolling slows down and may even skip or revert (if you scroll too fast). Not a problem for me, I got used pretty fast to that - it's the way my desktop's mouse scroll wheel also behaves.
  • Multi finger jestures don't work.

I did not notice freezing or keystroke misses YET, but I will keep using it and post an update. Alltogether it is a much better experience. The lag of the 001 firmware & Elan driver combination, although you get used to it (as you can't avoid it), is very irksome after all and getting rid of it is nothing short of great.

I lost multifinger gestures, but if I don't get freezes and missing keystrokes they are well worth sacrificing - at least for me.

Will keep you updated.

Glad my workaround also works with other ppl.

Check out this (permanent) solution. I would assume it's okay to post the link because it goes to the official lenovo forum in Chinese.

http://club.lenovo.com.cn/thread-1893234-1-1.html

The idea is the Miix 720 (Miix 5 Pro) backlit keyboard would fit perfectly with the Miix 700 (Miix 4). If you are really interested in the details, google-translate the article.

Everything works (apparently the backlight is dimmer). The only risk would be the 720 keyboard (6V, 260mA) requires a much stronger power source than the original 700 keyboard (3.3V, 50mA). The gentleman who kindly posted the article claimed that "the long-term effect of using the 720 keyboard on a 700 is unknown - probably pushing the power supply IC of the motherboard too hard".

---  I'm not a hardware person so could anyone elaborate on that?

I got my hand on a 720 keyboard and yes it worked well on my 700. The 720 keyboard has a Windows 10 precision trackpad so it's a really significant improvement. I have been using this frankenstein for a week and so far no issues.

According to the homework I have done, the 0009 is the second oldest firmware. The oldest one is 0007(?) and I couldn't find it anywhere online.

Haven't seen keypress missing on 0009, but I'm now going for a more permanent solution. Check out my latest post.

So far I haven't found major problems with both downgrading to the 009 version n with the new keyboard they sent me.

Interesting the new version works too but I'm not sure how we can obtain one unless Lenovo will replace it with the newer version.  They sent me the same ones we had.

Re: Miix 700 - issues after updating folio keyboard firmware

I use linux (ubuntu) mainly and my results are like this:

current version

Linux: works, is precise enough. no gestures (scrolling).

Windows: random cursor freezing, the reason for this very 10+ page post.

v0009

Linux: absolute unusable garbage. sometimes you can keep a finger on the pad and it will just move randomly, sometimes tapping causes the cursor to move anywhere. nigh impossible to do drag & drop, cursor speed is ridiculous and can't be easily adjusted. But hey, we have gestures!

Windows: works, is precise enough. haven't experienced missing keystrokes again.

So for me it's a tradeoff to whether I'll use windows or linux. :/ seems like the best option for windows is rolling back to v0009, best option for linux is updating.
