I also wanted US/International english, but after looking left and right i only found one on eBay for some 300$ so i ordered the UK one instead. In the end it's just 2 buttons that are marked differently between them, and if it works well it's worth it for me.

Re: Miix 700 - issues after updating folio keyboard firmware

Just got my 720 UK keyboard and I can confirm that it works.

However I have mixed feelings about it:

pros:

- the keyboard is much nicer

- the touchpad feels like heaven compared with the original one. And being a precision touchpad, it's fully configurable in windows.

- FnLock actually works. Press Fn+Esc and the F-keys will be default instead of the multimedia keys

- backlight is quite nice

cons:

- I'm still getting used to the changed layout. The wort part is the very small right shift key. I keep hitting UP instead of shift. Quite painful. Everything else is quite easy to get used to.

- Closing the keyboard does not put the tablet to sleep. I need to remember to press the power button, otherwise it stays awake and kills the battery.

- The keyboard take a bit more effort to attach to the tablet. I think that the magnet allignment is a bit different between 700 and 720

It is easy to change the key mapping, should you want to get a regular US keyboard

@droopanu thanks for the info! a few questions, if you have the time:

- what about battery life? does it seem to be affected too much by the higher power draw from the 720's keyboard?

- how about size? does it seem bigger / smaller than the original?

- and lastly, if you have any linux version around, does the touchpad work with gestures (especially scrolling!)?

Cheers!

I'm mostly using it connected to power so I don't know about battery life. But i reckon that if the backlight is off, there won't be much higher comsumption.

The keyboard as a whole cover is same size. But the keys are bigger and the touchpad is also a bit bigger. Less wasted space :)

I do not have a linux distro installed, sorry...

Re: Miix 700 - issues after updating folio keyboard firmware

Hi, I have bought a 720 keyboardand tried for nearly a week, so far it is working well.

There are 2 concerns:

- Since the slot for keyboard connection is longer on 700 than 720, it is a bit tricky to conect a 720 keyboard onto a 700 computer.

- The power consumption of a 720 keyboard is higher than a 700 keyboard (5V 260mA vs 3.3V 50mA), I'm not sure if this will harm the 700 computer itself.

Re: Miix 700 - issues after updating folio keyboard firmware

I just got the 720 keyboard today and i wanted to share the first imressions, on Windows by the way:

The bad:

  • It went through the customs, and that added some 28 euros to it's price, pushing the total cost of it to 78 euros for me.
  • As others already mentioned, closing the lid doesn't activate the switch anymore, the one that would put the computer to sleep (i had that set to shut down btw).
  • The locking part dimensions are a bit different, which makes it harder to snap in place. It takes some effort now, can't be done blindly like before. Once in place though, the lock is solid.
  • The second position magnets (the ones that keep the keyboard tilted/elevated) are not as strong as the original keyboard's so it doesn't lock as firmly in that position. The 720 uses 4 weaker magnets to lock into the elevated position, where as the 700 uses 2 stronger magnets. When i get some time, i will open the tablet and check if something can be done about this - if there is free space inside it should be possible to add a couple of magnets to match the extra ones of the new keyboard, achieving a firmer lock.
  • Nor really bad, but worth mentioning, it is slightly thicker than the 700 keboard. Haven't measured them, but it shouldn't be more than 1mm or so. It also extend towards the sides and top a bit more, less than 1mm in each direction though so hardly noticeable and not a problem in any way.

The good:

  • The touchpad works very well, so far at least. It is precise, it has no lag, and it supports a bunch of swipe gestures directly on the windows touchpad settings tab. Elan driver doesn't recognize it, and i will try to remove that one from the system at some point (is inactive anyway since i reflashed my original keyboard to v0009). It is also bigger. The precision part is important to me, as the 700 touchpad had too short movement canceling/ignore delays in the button areas, making it hard to click and drag precisely (in order to resize a window for example).
  • The keys are bigger. Nothing to explain here, just much better compare to the baby-sized keys of the 700 keyboard.
  • Backlight!!!!1 I have been typing this message in a dark room, all thanks to the backlight. Because of the lower port voltage i guess that the light is dimmer than on a 720 machine, still for me the first setting is already enough (it has two steps).
  • No difference in power consumption over the 700 keyboard with the backlight turned off, minimal with backlight on at the low setting. There should be 0 impact on battery life with the light off. While typing this, i have ~3.8W reported discharge rate (through batterybar pro), at 5% screen brightness (dark room), with low backlight on.

So far the experience is good, if not great, and it's what it should have been from the beginning with a 700. If no nasty surprises pop up during the next days i would say that it is totally worth the 78 euros, as it made the device usable. Will come back if there is something worth reporting.

I believe that the extra power requirements for the 720 keyboard is only for when the backlight is on. As long as the backlight is off, there should be no issues with the power drain or power adapter :)
