Thinkpad 8 Broadcom Code 10 error

2020-10-31, 16:46 PM

Greetings and thank you in advance.

I just dusted off my Thinkpad 8 this past weekend and made my first trip in 8 months. I like having this little device for travel as an adjunct to my laptop.

I powered it up and took it with me.

No WiFi. I checked the device manager and there was a Code 10

I then went through all the typical rigmarole, uninstall driver...install driver...etc.

No luck.

I finally figured there was  registry issue and could not figure it out.

I then reinstalled Windows 10. Fresh install. Did not keep anything.

Code 10 persisting.

I am not sure at this point what to do.

I would be inclined to replace the card but that is not so trivial in the TP8, although doable. I would need to find a compatible card

Through this all I was able to connect a USB WiFi card to update all the drivers and have a fresh installation.

Thank you in advance for all your thoughts.

Sal

In follow up, I installed Windows 8.1 since I had the USB installation drive from Lenovo. I created a system image of the Windows 10 install so I can go back.

Installed without issue. Looks just like when I got it.

Code 10 error.

I think the card is the problem, rather than the drivers.

Anybody have any suggestions for replacement?

Thank you in advance.

I just popped off the back cover of the Tablet. Looks like the WiFi card is soldered on to the motherboard. Cannot exchange.

You are not alone with this issue. I think it is a firmware problem of the wireless module, but we haven't found any fix. I use small USB Wi-Fi adapter.

There is a long thread about it https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-Tablets/Thinkpad8-no-wireless-networks-detected/m-p/3680784

I have not been able to figure it out. Still.

I have a short cable with the USB WiFi adapter. is about three inches long and just hangs off the side.

It is a bit annoying.

Ii even tried an Apple iPad mini as an alternative. As a long time Windows tablet user, the iOS is annoying.

Now I mostly use my Surface Go as my alternative for travel, but I really liked having the 8" tablet and my laptop rather than a 10" tablet and my laptop.

Although, it is somewhat reassuring that there are others with the same plight and not just me or something that I did.
