Re: Windows 10 upgrade yet on the K3011W

2015-11-01, 13:59 PM

Hi guys I'm excited to find this thread regarding K3011 upgrade to Win'10!

After what seemed an eternity of waiting for all the drivers to become available, I was finally able to let my beloved Lynx upgrade naturally to Win'10 about 3 weeks ago. And for the most part everything seemed to run awesome on it! All aspects seemed to work fine without me having to do any extra fiddling. I was happy! Then...

... seems since about 3-4 days ago the Lynx suddenly got really thirsty on its battery usage(!) Now it won't go even a day without sucking the battery dry even if I don't use it at all.  (it WAS working great until then!)

What happened? I assume some software update got pushed to the Lynx that's causing this issue..  can anyone else confirm this?

@NordicMan - What drivers have you seen updated? I wasn't aware that any had for a very long time. I haven't seen any changes in battery. What mode are you in (sleep, etc) when you see this happen? What about when it's off (or in safe mode)? If it happens when off, your battery is dying and it has nothing to do with Windows.

@Bendaly1mufc - Wrong thread

@dickwright - It's in Windows Update, and it's the same v9.14.3.1177 from 2013. If you want to get it ahead of time, use IE to visit (http://catalog.update.microsoft.com) and search for "Intel Graphics Media Accelerator."  As you know from earlier posts, some people have had problems with it. I never did, but I also never understood why. There's a big thread over on Intel with more:

Thanks for the reply rseiler.  I'm not sure what drivers have recently been updated.. where can I find this out?

Skipping back.... For the 1st couple months when Win'10 came out I was unable to naitively upgrade the Lynx due to missing graphics drivers. Then all of a sudden about 3 weeks ago I checked my upgrade status & was surprised to see "all is good-to-go" so WOOHOO I made the upgrade without any problems at all. And for the first couple of weeks everything including battery life was pretty OK, meaning the tablet would live off-charger for about 3 maybe 4 days in standby mode. Just like it did with Win'8.1.

But then starting a few days ago suddenly I have to start charging it every single night if I want to use it the next day :(

Not sure why...

I check task manager & nothing unusual is running.  I even took it into a dark room to see if the display was still 'on' when dimmed in standby mode, but nope the display looked off.

I can fully power down the tablet & no battery drain at all, as expected.

Sure my battery isn't good-as-new anymore, but it's still in OK shape.  I hope I can tweak some more life out of this thing!

That seems to align with the latest cumulative update, but that could be a coincidence:

http://www.infoworld.com/article/2999813/microsoft-windows/microsoft-releases-windows-10-cumulative-update-kb-3105210-and-patch-kb-3106928.html

Unfortunately, CUs are a bit of a black hole, since we're not really told with any specifics what's in them, aside from brief mention of included security updates.

I haven't installed that update yet.

Anything else installed recently, from MS or otherwise (aside from anything to do with Windows Defender)?

Start/Settings/Update&Security/Advanced Options/View your update history

Control Panel/Programs/View installed updates

Control Panel/Programs/Uninstall a Program

Thanks again rseiler, the only recent activity I can see that may have any meaning was:

2015-10-15  - Cumulative Update for Windows 10 (KB3097617)

And from the programs list I see an entry that Dropbox was installed 2015-10-22, although I'm pretty sure I had Dropbox installed way before that..  which is a bit weird in itself.

Maybe delete/reinstall Dropbox?

Could either one of these be chomping on my battery?

So it's not the Cumulative Update, since you don't have the recent one that would have fit into your timeline.

Dropbox updates itself frequently, so that would explain its date, but the 22nd might predate what you're talking about, too. Still, if the update triggered the need for DB to reindex/resync everything (do you have a lot of files in your Dropbox, and when you hover the mouse over its icon does it show as up-to-date?) or some of the other fun things it does from time to time, it could certainly drain a battery in the process, though surely it would have finished by now.

Maybe it's just the battery. You can work through this article for some ideas. The reporting from powercfg (viewable in your browser) is pretty nice:

I was just curious if everyone's tablet survived the major November update and the subsequent smaller updates.
